1974 AMC Javelin AMX
401 / 4 speed
Forced to sell my personal '74 project AMX. I don't have the time to finish this AWESOME! AMC AMX project car. I purchased this excellent dry climate car in complete, running condition and had high hopes for an expensive, body-off restoration. First of all, I have every piece of stainless exterior trim, rockers, excellent original AMX grille, side marker lights, emblems, hood trim, factory spoilers, tail lights, bumpers, hardware, EVERYTHING to put this car back together. Yes, this is a real Javelin AMX 401 car. I took time to check the cylinder head and block codes as well, which show as 1973 built (correct for my '74 X). Each nut, bolt, and trim piece has been labeled, and or bagged for easy re-assembly.

The photo above was taken only 60 or so days ago. When I purchased the car, it was said to have had the front power disc brakes rebuilt (they work good too). I wasted no time and removed every exterior trim piece and more. The body was stripped with the aid of paint stripper and sand paper. I didn't do the area below the bumper because I just don't have any more time to spend on it, thats why I'm offering it here! I know its great and would love to see it brought back to factory new. The red finish that was on the car was cracking throughout. Originally, this car was finished in G4 plum metallic with the white T-stripe (Go Package) This was evident underneath the red paint and on the door trim tag. It also sported white knit vinyl seats when it rolled out of the Kenosha plant.
The original 401 in this car has been built up completely. It is just plain MEAN AND NASTY, LOTS OF HORSEPOWER! BE SURE TO PLAY THE VIDEOS. The cars engine was built to race before I purchased it. There is a high performance cam, noticably higher compression (runs 93 octane) and nice 1.6 aluminum roller rocker arms. The exhaust breathes through large tube headers to dual exhaust exiting out back. There is a header leak at the drivers side gasket. I've got a new set of header gaskets and a new set of ported Hedman headers included. The valve covers are also leaking some oil, a new set of valve cover gaskets is included. The engine is fitted with a nice Moroso deep sump oil pan. The oil is fresh 10-40 Royal Purple with KN oil filter. This car hits HARD on all 8 cylinders. Spark plugs are fresh too. Carburetion is done by a Holley 750 double pumper carb to an aluminum Edelbrock intake. Fuel is fed with a trunk mounted fuel cell and Holley electric fuel pump. Ignition is by a Mallory distributor, and a Mallory coil, high performance Optima red top battery. The fuel pump and ignition is currently operated with 2 loose toggle switches under the dash.
The 4-speed manual transmission is shifted with a Hurst Verti-Gate shifter. Shifts through all the gear and reverse fine. The posi-trac rear end was rebuilt when I got the car and fitted with 4.10 gears. I have a great set of 3.15s included. The clutch grips solid in this car. I think the car is sitting a little high with the Slot wheels and tires on it. It has air shocks fitted in the back right now.
The front spoiler is in great condition as are the original tail lights. The front grille is original and in excellent condition. As previously mentioned, all exterior stainless, trim, and emblems are included.
The all steel, original body is in very good condition. I could have shot the car in primer, but decided to go ahead and list it in its current condition (keeping in an enclosed shop) to showcase the excellent original metal on the car. The only patches are two on the lower rear quarter panels. I removed a thin layer of bondo on the drivers side door where a dent was and there were a few dings that were fixed in the past, the most noticable being the right front fender dent, left the bondo there to show you. You look closely at all of the areas on this car, like around the window glass, roofline, drip rails, under doors, rocker panel areas, etc. and you will be impressed with this cars metal condition. Underneath the car I found one area you may or may not choose to patch on the front passenger side floor. Otherwise, all flooring and trunk is original and excellent, never painted or touched up. The subframe and underbody is factory solid. On the vehicle lift, I noted leaking oil at the valve covers (new gaskets included) and the transmission tail housing is damp. The driveshaft U-Joint has been recently replaced. All of the exterior glass in the car is very nice except the windshield, it has a long crack and will need to be replaced when you build the car. This has been a tagged, registered car here in Texas, last tagged in 2006.
The previous owner purchased this car at an Oklahoma Police Auction many years ago, at that time it was issued an Oklahoma Vin and title. Now it has been titled here in Texas for many years, the previous owner lived in the McKinney, Texas area. The title is a clear, blue Texas title ready to transfer. You can see under the hood at the radiator core support many badges and plates showing different southern car shows this AMX participated in during the 1980's. This is a car with just over 64,000 miles. Its condition reflects it.
No ameteur primer job to hide anything on this bare metal AMX
The interior shows all of original gauges and dash. The clock and tachometer work, but they come on and off. The speedometer moves and the other gauges work when they want to. The wiring will need to be checked as well as any fuses. The radio comes on, but no noise. The power brakes work good, so does the power steering. The emergency brake has a broken cable underneath the car, a simple fix. The AMX specific machined dash and doorpanel pieces are very nice. The dash itself is cracked near the drivers speaker, a have a great original dash included for your restoration. I also have a factory AMX assembly manual for a '73. You can see, I bought this car with full intention of a total restoration. This car has the potential to be one of the BEST. Here are the options broken down for you
401 engine
4 speed manual transmission
power steering
power front disc brakes
rear defogger
G4 plum metallic exterior
white T-stripe (Go Package)
white knit vinyl interior
The black bucket seating is correct and looks original, but I know they were white vinyl at one time. They are faded black, the passenger seat is split on the side bolster, otherwise the seats look pretty good, the back one is in good shape. The original headliner is excellent and the original doorpanels are very nice, only one or two small cracks on one. The rear defogger is intact, but it appears the package tray has been changed at some time.
Thanks to my bare metal presentation, you can see all of the original lead factory seams at the roofline, excellent condition.
Above and below are typical rust prone areas where this car has NONE.
You can see where the quarter was cut and repaired years ago above. The other quarter received a similar repair, but even lower.
The trunk is solid, rear mounted fuel cell and electric fuel pump. The original gas tank and straps are one of the few items I don't have for the car. I've got both original, straight bumpers I want to mention. The rear bumper has the factory guards on it in good shape.
The above is a past body dent repair I decided to leave. This fender is fine once its grounded out and properly repaired, not rusty is the important thing!
Heres some close ups of the trunk lid steel and adjoining steel areas, excellent!
The following pictures are many detailed pics taken on our vehicle lift. Take a good look at the recent rear end work and bushings as well as the original floors and substructure.
