I bought this car in June, 2000 and it has served variously as my daily driver and restoration project. I upgrade as I find parts or replace failed parts. I take the train into the city so daily driving means 2 miles a day to the station and occasional weekend mall runs. The Bimmer has usually served as our third/fourth car in the family. The speedo cluster was replaced by P.O. and showed 98,500 miles when I purchased it with 133,000 miles on the title. Odometer currently shows almost 101,000. The speedometer/odometer has only worked intermittently since I replaced the short-shifter last Fall. True mileage is unknown but estimated to be 135,000. Under the hood/drive-train: Replace radiator and heater hoses and clamps and belts. Installed new water pump, flushed radiator, thermostat, fan clutch Newer alternator, battery [February], battery cables. Installed factory remanufactured ECU [February] have performance chip [not installed]. New air flow meter, fuel pump regulator and filter. New black powder-coated/silver valve cover [vanity] New high-flow catalytic converter with Borla exhaust. Great exhaust note and looks great with the chrome-tipped dual pipes. Upgraded differential with later-model 635 limited-slip high ratio differential. Replaced drive shaft flex disc. New short-throw shifter installed with new walnut shifter handle. Sweet. Suspension: New Front and rear struts New front wheel hubs, front calipers, pads, sensors, rotors and brake hoses. Replaced front upper and lower control arm bushings as well as the thrust arm bushings and sway bar links. I tried to get the suspension mechanic to use the 740i thrust arm bushings but he ignored my instructions and ordered and installed the original specification bushings. Still, the car still handles great! Very tight. Anchored steering box and replaced power steering pump and hose. Front tires recently replaced with less than one hundred miles on them. The rears have maybe a thousand miles, but are seven years old and showing signs of dry rot and vibrate when cold. Interior: I installed a very low-mileage 1987 beige interior with very little wear. Fabulous upgrade with the full-length console. The rear speaker pods look great! I didnt install the rear compressor for the refrigerated compartment, but it is included in the sale. Interior includes newer door weather stripping. The radio is a Blaupunkt Honolulu CD-50, 4x40 watts. The backlighting matches the red/orange lighting of the rest of the dash. It has a single CD player with removable face. The speakers came with the new interior and sound great [for a 1987 technology]. Front dash is cracked currently covered by a deck mat to prevent further splitting. Sunroof works great opens and flips up. PO tried to dye the headliner black - good concept, bad execution. Exterior: Previous owner repainted the car it was charcoal grey now Its a silver-grey. For a daily driver, the paint is fine. There is overspray in the door jambs from the Shadowline effort [see below] but otherwise is quite presentable. The car was undercoated but still managed to get rust in the rear wheel wells I tried to show it in the pics. There is very little rust elsewhere. Previous owner tried to created a Shadowline look by blacking out much of the chrome. Although the effect was great it looked weird in the front so I replaced the front grilles [around headlights] as well as the kidney-shaped grilles in the center. The front spoiler is included but needs to be bead blasted and reinforced where it is cracked at fog lights. All hardware is included. I added a rear deck spoiler and custom BMW wheels that really brings the car's design into this century [IMHO]. The front turn signal lenses and roundels replaced with new OEM parts. Front windshield was replaced due to a crack. This is a 22 year-old car that is not fully restored. It has a bunch of niggly little problems and a couple of issues: A/C doesn't work - has a leak. Blower motor doesn't work but I am including a brand-new OEM replacement - easy repair. Interior lights don't light when door is opened. Some of the dash lights don't work .... but come on when the car hits a bump just right. New drivers seat doesn't match wiring harness so seat is fixed in place unless you cross the correct wires. Back-up lights don't work [went out with speedo] Cruise control doesn't work Passenger seat back requires tensioner adjustment Speedometer doesn't work. Panic stops require a lot pedal pressure. Rust behind rear wheel wells and bubbles here and there. Car was undercoated but still managed to get some rust in the usual places. Doors require a good shove to close all the way. I just don't have the luxury of time to putter with this anymore. It's too idiosyncratic for my au pair to drive and I can use the money to make some upgrades to my XJS convertible. Most of the mechanical repairs were done by professional mechanics so no worries about a back-yard mechanic making things worse.
