Or, if you would rather discuss the car and an outright purchase, please feel free to call us at 925-846-1451 and we'll gladly answer any questions about the car, shipping, etc. HISTORY BMW M5 The BMW M5 is a performance version of BMW's 5-Series and created by BMW Motorsports. First introduced at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1984, the M5 has been made from various 5-Series versions throughout the years, including the E28, E34, E39 and E60. Originally, the M5 was hand-built utilizing the 535i chassis and a modified BMW M1 engine. When introduced, it was the fastest production saloon car in the world. In 1984 BMW offered multiple versions of the M5 to accommodate the different markets and the rules that governed the production of vehicles in each of those areas. There were Left Hand Drives, Right Hand Drives, Euro Specs, North American Spec (NA), and South African (ZA) Spec M5. The North American M5 versions were equipped with a catalytic converter that degraded the horsepower from 286 to 256. With the 286 horsepower engine, the Euro spec M5's could race from zero to sixty in just 6.2 seconds. The North American specs accomplished the sixty-mile-an-hour run in 6.5 seconds. The production of the M5 on the E28 series platform lasted from 1984 through 1986. From 1989 through 1995 the M5 was produced on the E34 platform. For the North American market, production of the E34 M5 was from 1991 through 1993 and continued the tradition of being hand built usually in teams and transpiring over a two week time period. Under the hood was a modified inline-six cylinder engine from the E28 M5 and the E24 M635CSi. The bore and stroke were enlarged to a total capacity of 3535 cc and a compression of 10:1. Unique to the M5 engine were a new forged steel crankshaft, camshafts, and electronically controlled butterfly valve. The result was 3.6 liters and 315 horsepower. The US and Switzerland versions received catalytic converters and a lower horsepower rating, 310. Power was dispersed to the rear wheels with the help of a Getrag 280, 5 five-speed manual transmission. Standard was a limited slip differential with a maximum locking of twenty-five percent. The engine was further modified in 1992 to 3.8 liters, except for the North American market that retained the 3.6-liter unit. Power rose to a respectable 340 horsepower for the Euro Spec engines. A six-speed Getrag gearbox, introduced in 1992 for the Euro Spec M5, continued to improve the performance of the M5. In 1998 at the Geneva Motor Show, BMW introduced the E39 M5 that stayed in production until 2003. It was built at the Dingolfing factory located in Germany and unlike it E34 version, was not hand built but rather, constructed in an assembly line. This resulted in 20,482 examples of the E39 being created. There were three versions of the M5, the European Left and Right Hand Drive versions and the North American version. Under the hood was a 4.9-liter eight-cylinder engine producing 400 horsepower for the Euro Spec and 394 for US variants. The response time of the engine was greatly improved though the incorporation of Double-VANOS technology that varies the intake and exhaust valves for the two cylinder banks. It also allows for individual throttle butterflies for each cylinder. Standard was a twenty-five percent maximum locking limited slip differential, a six-speed manual Getrag Type D gearbox and a reinforced clutch. The Motorsports department modified the 5-series suspension, reducing the spring height and applying thicker anti-roll bars. Other improvements meant a stiffer ride for the occupants, but less body-roll for the vehicle as it were attacking corners. Large ventilated disc brakes on all four corners meant excellent stopping power. The recalculating-ball steering system was improved, lowering its overall steering ratio and allowing for quicker response times. Throughout its five-year production lifespan, the E39 received updates both aesthetically and mechanically. Performance was rated at 5.3 seconds for the zero-to-sixty run with an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. At the time, it once again captured the title of fastest production four-door sedan in the world. The M series of BMW is truly the pinnacle of luxury and performance that can be ascertained from a sedan. The overall shape of the 5 Series body is a well-done evolution of a handsome basic design that dates back more than two decades. The 5 Series body shell is extremely rigid, a plus in terms of both safety and noise reduction. With its low 0.30 coefficient of drag, the 5 Series is one of the most aerodynamically efficient sedans on the market. Also aiding in keeping unwanted noise at bay are foam-filled body cavities and redesigned door seals. Less evident than outright performance, are the concerns BMW has devoted to occupant safety. The front airbags are controlled by a dual-mode system that changes the deployment speed of the airbag depending on whether occupants are wearing seat belts; the front-passenger airbags will not inflate if that seat is unoccupied. The 5 Series cars come standard with side airbags in front. Also, a clever Head Protection System is supplied. Traction control and anti-lock brakes are standard on all models. BMW's system of traction and cornering-stability enhancement, called Dynamic Stability Control, along with Dynamic Brake Control come standard on manual-transmission M5 cars. Dynamic Stability Control is a computer-controlled system that uses inputs from a variety of onboard sensors to selectively apply braking force and reduce power to individual wheels to counteract skids. Dynamic Brake Control reinforces the driver's pedal effort in emergency braking situations. INTERIOR FEATURES The 5 Series interior gets high marks for comfort and appearance. The trim level can be described as sumptuous. The M5 is trimmed in soft leather with burl walnut panels discreetly applied to the center console, dashboard, and door panels. Also included are power front seats with 10-way adjustments are standard along with a power tilt-and-telescope steering column. The automatic climate control has separate temperature settings for driver and front-seat passenger. The M5 comes standard with a 14-speaker stereo. A power moon roof comes standard on the "M." Heated front seats are included as is high quality leather seating area. Deeply bolstered seats provide excellent support for more "spirited" driving. Most notable is BMW's Head Protection System, which consists of a tubular airbag on each side of the cabin anchored at the base of the windshield pillar and above the rear door. In case of a side impact, the tube inflates, breaking away from the trim panels that conceal it, and serves as a barrier between heads and hard surfaces that would cause serious injury. Tests have shown the head protection system markedly improves survivability in side impacts. DRIVING AN E39 M5 The M5 accelerates very quickly for a mid size sports sedan, covering 0-60 mph in approximately 5.3 seconds. The powerful 32-valve V8 is quiet and unobtrusive, making it heard only when pushed hard. With its tremendous torque, this engine does give the M5 a significant advantage in sporting appeal versus the BMW 540i and 528i. The 5 Series BMWs offer superb handling, regardless of suspension package and power plant. The M5 reacts crisply to steering inputs, and is a pleasure to drive under any conditions, and on any roads. For the ultimate in razor-sharp road behavior, select the Sport mode by simply pressing a button on the dash. The result is crisper shifting, and firmer ride that improves overall handling but does not significantly compromise ride quality. Enthusiasts will most certainly agree that the minimal ride compromise is well worth the improved handling and increase in the "fun factor" when it comes to drivability of the M5. M5 MODELS - EQUIPMENT All BMW M5 E39 cars were powered by a 5.0-liter, dual Vanos 32-Valve V8 engine. The engine management system includes electronic throttle valve control of 8 individual throttles. The M5 is equipped with M Driving Dynamics Control & M Servotronic (speed sensitive) power steering. Finally, the cars have both DSC (Dynamic Stability Control, and ASC(All Season Traction Control) with a limited slip differential. Stock horsepower is just under 400 (approximately 394 hp for USA cars) with a whopping 368 ft. lbs. torque. CONDITION OF THIS PARTIUCLAR 2000 BMW M5 Mechanical We apologize for the length of this listing, but as you can tell, we feel strongly that the BMW M5 has no competition when it comes to high performance sports sedans, and this is the nicest example that we have seen, so the description has gotten a little lengthy. Also, as those close to us will attest, brevity has never been one of our strengths! This M5 was been owned by one absolutely fanatical BMW "cargiver" prior to our purchase of the M5 from a private party, and exclusive use by the President of Classic Cars Ltd. (when not stored in our indoor showroom). Unlike so many of the M5's in the marketplace, this example was never sold through an auction or passed around from driver to driver that "always wanted to drive an M5." The M5 has the appearance of a BMW that was recently delivered to its new owner, not a pre-owned BMW. The car is a truly beautiful example of a car that has been pampered in every respect. and an excellent example of a BMW that has been cared for with a "no expenses spared'" philosophy to ensure that it is in the best mechanical and cosmetic condition at all times. Unlike many BMW M5's, this car is virtually 100% sock when it comes to its engine, suspension, wheels/tires, steering wheel, and other components. The car has seen no major modifications or changes from stock. The only change that has been made to the M5 is the addition of a Dinan chip (California & 50 State legal) that safely raises the rev-limit by 250 rpm (bringing horsepower to an estimated 405hp), providing a broader power band and greater road speed in each gear. The software also removes the top speed governor, enabling the cars to attain their "natural" top speed. Finally, the software also speeds up throttle response in the "standard" mode, and improves throttle modulation in the "sport" mode. Another subtle improvement is the addition of a BMW installed short shift kit to make the shifting of the M5 shorter, and more precise. This particular BMW M5 will appeal to those individuals that are interested in a car that has been adult owned/driven, has not been "tracked" or driven competitively, and has not had changes to the suspension, wheels, engine or other major components. Additionally, the M5 has been maintained by the BMW dealer, was delivered to a Northern California BMW dealer, and was owned by one fanatical owner from its original purchase date in December, 1999 until we purchased the M5. The car remained was serviced under factory warranty and then had the benefit of a two year, extended, full coverage warranty program so it was never neglected and received considerable attention. All of the service work is documented, and supported by the Car Fax history report that is 100% clear in every area. The car has a totally clean history and no indication of theft, odometer rollback, salvage title, or other items of concern. This is not a car that has been sold multiple times at an auction, and been abused and mistreated. It is a well cared for, no excuses, high quality private party car. Please be aware that there is a significant difference between a private owner, well maintained BMW M5 (like this example), and many BMW's offered by "Mega" dealers, and others on Ebay/other Internet sellers. The car has been serviced by Sonnen BMW (just North of San Francisco) and has been maintained on a schedule/program that exceeds the BMW's requirements. To provide the prospective buyer with a sense of the service intervals on this BMW M5, the following reflects a summary of some of the service history of the M5. An incredible amount of preventative maintenance and ongoing service was performed on the BMW both under the factory warranty, and the extended warranty. The extremely particular owner took advantage of every opportunity to have the car inspected, and aggressively pursued issues in order to take full advantage of the warranty/warranties. Notes on the invoices suggest that in some cases the dealer agreed to repairs/improvements simply as a result of the persistence of the owner to resolve a particular issue (even though there may not have been a need to replace/repair certain items).. Prior to reviewing the detailed information below, please keep in mind that within the previous 10,000 - 20,000 miles, the BMW has had a number of improvements that are significant. Of particular interest to prospective buyers (as a result of the cost of the repairs/upgrades) are the following; removal of the heads to clean all of the carbon from the cylinders and re-surfacing of the heads, new Vanos system, new mass air-flow system, new cam position sensor, new tires, new fuel pump, new battery, new rear bushings, new drive shaft, new belts, hoses, oil/filter services, the list goes on & on. In addition to regular servicing, they addressed the cars every need, including the topping off all other fluids, adjusting tire pressures and a check of all other systems. Since the car was purchased, it has never been neglected, mistreated or abused in any way. COSMETIC CONDITION - EXTERIOR / TRIM When people see this BMW, they are amazed to hear that it is not a much newer car. Simply stated, the car is absolutely striking, and has the appearance of a much later model. The BMW is finished in the especially attractive color combination of "Swartz" (Black) with a striking black leather interior, and absolutely lovely burl wood interior dash/door trim. There is no damage to the paint/body, and the M5 has never been involved in a collision, or received any paintwork as a result of accident or damage. The paint has a brilliant shine/gloss, no fading, partial re-painting, or problems. Of course, the Car Fax report supports this totally clean history of accident/collision damage. Cosmetically, this car is exceptional, not only for its year, but even for a much later M5. There are no significant dings, scratches, nicks, or flaws on the exterior surfaces. Any extremely minor imperfections are noticeable only upon extremely close inspection and only visible to the most critical eye. In fact, even a close examination of the car does not reveal any dents, dings or damage that detract from the overall quality and attractiveness of the M5. To say that this car has been fanatically well maintained is an understatement. We believe that the wheels that are on the E39 M5 are the best looking of all of the wheels ever offered on a "5 Series" BMW. The wheels on this M5 are in excellent condition with no significant damage, and only very few minor scrapes (on the far outside of the rim) would not be noticeable to most people. The wheels are shod with high performance tires that have approximately 20,000 miles. The glass is free from any stars or scratches, and all of the power windows (and sunroof) operate perfectly. In fact, all of the electrical items are fully functional including the cruise control, computer system (trip, gas mileage, etc.) and other operating systems. COSMETIC CONDITION - INTERIOR The interior is equally as good as the exterior condition of the BMW. The appointments are very high quality and the interior has been very well cared for, indeed. The entire interior is in lovely condition. The car has beautiful leather interior that is free from any rips, tears or wear areas, and has been carefully maintained in a fashion that is consistent with the cars mechanical care. The car is beautifully appointed and shows little if any wear on any part of the interior. The sport seats (very comfortable, and not overly "fitted") reflect a lovely patina (and aroma) of fine leather but are totally free from rips, tears, damage, or signs of neglect. Both front seats are fully adjustable electronically, heated and even include adjustable leg "supports." The rear seat has not been used for any type of car seat and is equally as good as the front seating areas, showing no wear. The M5 is equipped with the optional rear electric window shade that is activated using a button on the dashboard. It works perfectly and can be used to block sun into the car, but also to protect the top portions of the rear seating surfaces that often times suffer from sun damage. The car is also equipped with side sunscreens on the rear windows and tinted windows on all but the front windshield (factory tinted). This M5 also has the optional split, rear fold down seats and the ski bag feature that allows skis to be placed through the trunk and into a "bag" that folds out from the center section of the rear seat. It has never been used. The rear seat configuration and the sunshade can be seen in the photos. The carpet, door panels, dash, center console and other areas of the interior area are in beautiful condition, as well. The carpets are covered with M5 floor mats that are in excellent condition. The wood trim is virtually perfect with no chipping, cracking, or defects. WHAT IS INCLUDED WITH THE M5? Of course, the BMW comes with all of the original books, and manuals that were provided to its original owner. It is very clean and has been wiped down when the car received a hand washing. The photos tell the story regarding the condition of the exterior, interior, rear cargo area, and even the engine bay of this beautiful BMW M5. The trunk area is spotless, and contains the navigation unit along with the remote CD changer. The carpet is perfect. Most of the original factory tools are in place, although it appears as if a few may be missing based on what appears to be empty spaces in the tool area. FYI, the M5 cars were not fitted with a spare when new as result of the rear exhaust configuration. However, the battery (relatively new) is located in the rear trunk area of the M5 and properly covered DRIVING IMPRESSIONS - THIS PARTIUCLAR BMW M5 Over the years, we have been fortunate enough to own/drive virtually every model of BMW that has been produced during the past 25+ years. And, frankly, as everyday "drivers" we almost always have a "5 Series" as one of our personal cars. To our way of thinking, the cars are a good size, handle exceptionally well for mid-sized sedans, and offer a very high "fun quotient" for a 5 passenger, sporting sedan. The later model cars also add the benefit of traction control (DSC), along with the ability to use the car as a semi automatic by utilizing the options sport/automatic transmission mode. For the true BMW enthusiast/purist, the BMW M5 is an absolutely amazing car. We have owned several 5401's, two E28 M5's, and an E34 M5. Our long search for the perfect newer body style E39 M5 finally ended when we came across this particular car..more on that later. This M5 runs and drives offers all of the benefits of the earlier M5 cars with the addition of a number of significant mechanical & performance upgrades. Needless to say, the most noteworthy change is the addition of the marvelous 400+ hp V8 engine, and 6-speed transmission. Of course, as you would expect from a car of this caliber, the BMW M5 is 100% reliable and usable. Gone are the days when high horsepower and performance meant a lumpy idle, rough ride, and a complete lack of comfort and luxury. The M5 offers it all. Driven easily, the car is docile and luxurious. When put sport mode and driven more aggressively, the car feels like a smaller, The maintenance that the car has received since the time it was delivered new in California is certainly a plus and is almost certain to minimize future mechanical concerns and prolonging the life of major components. With over 400+ horsepower on tap, the car has excellent response in all of the ranges including acceleration from a standstill, highway speeds, and passing speeds on the highway. This car is very quick, and belongs in the hands of experienced, capable drivers. Treated with respect, we think this is one of the best high performance sedans ever produced. The steering is precise and tight and there are absolutely no vibrations or problems with the car at any speed. The cars brakes are excellent, and stop the BMW straight and sure and the emergency brake is full functional. The BMW will be sold to California buyers with a recent California smog certificate. This M5 is a "No Surprises" car in every respect and a car that will make a BMW enthusiast out of anyone that has an interest in a serious, high performance, sports sedan. A FEW NOTES * The license plates "M5HTROD" DO NOT come with the car and are from a previous M5 that we owned (they are for display purposes, only). The California license for this vehicle is 4JKB989. In accordance with California law, both front and rear license plates will be provided with the M5. * The M5 photographs were taken 2 months ago and 100 miles have been added to the car since that time. Also, the dark window tint has been removed from the side windows so that the car is now 100% legal in all states (the local constable reminded us that they were too dark!) * We are not certain if the center, console mounted BMW telephone is functional, and have not made any effort to determine its functionality. Out of state buyers are responsible for the high bid and any shipping costs. California buyers are subject to the appropriate sales tax, DMV transfer, and fees associated with the purchase of any used vehicle sale in the state of California.
We mail, via Priority Mail, transferable documents within 48 hours of the transfer of funds unless, of course, the transaction is local.
While shipping and transportation costs (if appropriate) are the responsibility of the winning bidder, we can assist with locating a suitable transporter. We regularly ship cars all over the USA/World, and can often times locate very competitive rates for transporting vehicles door to door, to a local terminal, enclosed, open, etc. Please call us for specific information/rates to your location.
