NO RESERVE. BID TO WIN.... Up for bid is a neat 1968 Buick “Special Deluxe” 4-door station wagon that runs, drives and stops decent for it’s age. These are becoming pretty rare, so this is your chance to get one. I bought this thinking I'd make a hot rod grocery getter for my girlfriend, but other projects are in need. Sorry but I am not open to trades. I was told this car has the original 350 2bbl engine, with the 350 auto transmission, although I’ve never ran the numbers. Looks all stock to me. The mileage I’m sure has “exceeded” 100K, with the odometer reading 11304. I’ve had the car just over 3 years, the previous owner used it as a daily driver. I’ve only put 215 miles on the car and the furthest I’ve driven is about 30 miles with no problems. The only issue for drivability is that the turn signals stopped working, no click or anything when moving the signal stalk. The headlights, high beams, taillights and brake lights all work fine.
Trim Tag reads as follows:
058 0115
ST 68-43435 BW01114 BODY
TR 111 EE PAINT
Feel free to email me with questions, and/or additional picture requests.
ENGINE: This 350 has a 2 BBL carburetor with a coil choke on the intake manifold. The carburetor has been rebuild and runs fine. The engine ticks a little bit on start up, probably due to the lack of me driving it. Once up to temperature, the oil light does come on at a stop, but goes out once under acceleration. I’ve replace part of the ignition wires leading to the starter, as the old ones were dried out and cracked. I’ve also replaced both the positive and negative battery leads.
TRANSMISSION: Performs smooth, as it should. Engages gears and shifts through all three forward gears and reverse with good downshift and torque converter performance. The gear selector does not line exactly up with the appropriate indicators on the dash.
INTERIOR: The interior, blue in color, is pretty rough, and will need attention. It currently has a couple bucket seats, which appear to be from a van, with armrests, they also sit very low as compared to the original bench seat height. There are a couple cracks in the dashboard near the center. The floors are pretty solid but I’ve never peeled back the sound deadener floor material. The door panels look rough and a new headliner is definitely required. The rear cargo wheel covers will need new vinyl. I've never had the tailgate down, as I believe one of the hinges is broken. The tailgate glass is there and manually cranks down with minimal help.
EXTERIOR: The dark blue paint is faded has cracks and minor scratches throughout. The body has a few rust areas that will need fixed. I believe it is common on these a-body cars for the radiator core support to get rusted, and this is no exception. The spot at the rear of the rear doors, just below the seat on the rocker panel has a rust thru hole, on both sides. The rear spare tire storage compartment, at the bottom, will require some attention due to rust as well, this can also be seen from the outside below the rear quarter panel. Door bottoms look fine. All the glass looks good with no cracks.
CHASSIS: The Frame looks good, although has plenty of surface rust. Shocks hold the car at a decent stance and function properly. The wheels are stock 14” with center hubcaps. The tires have plenty of tread on them, and have been road worthy, but do show some minor cracking. This car has 4-wheel drum brakes, which are non-power manual operation. I just replaced the back brake shoes drums, and the two lines off the tee on the rear axle to the wheel cylinders. I suspect the front shoes will need checked out, as there is a slight pull to one side under heavy braking. I never opened them up, as I had hopes of a disc brake upgrade. This car does have power steering that works fine and turns smooth with normal play for a car this age.
The car has a homemade dual exhaust as I received it. Someone cut the Y-pipe on one side, welded it shut, and then ran another pipe down the other side. The tail pipes dump out behind the rear wheels to the left and right sides. Pipes are fairly solid but have surface rust. The sound is mellow, kind of throaty when you rev it. I believe there to be a leak developing near the exhaust manifolds.
