1951 Cadillac Series 60 Fleetwood
1951 Cadillac Series 60 Fleetwood Magnificent All Oriignal "Survivor" 35,259 Original Miles! _____________________________________________ Thank you for visiting our auction. We realize that this listing is VERY long. Since we sell the majority of our vehicles to out of state/country buyers that are unable to view our vehicles in person, they encourage as much detail as possible when it comes to descriptions and photographs. If you find that the narrative is too lengthy, we encourage you to review the "Specifications" section along with the 100 photographs of the Cadillac. Another option is to call us to discuss the car (925-846-1451). We'll be glad to answer your questions pertaining to shipping, a "pre-auction" purchase, condition of this incredible car. Thank you! Classic Cars Ltd. ________________________________________ 1951 CADILLAC HISTORY / SPECIFICATIONS A minor facelift and small trim variations were the main Cadillac styling news this year. Miniature egg crate "grilles" were set into the outboard grille extension panels below the headlights. Larger, bullet shaped style bumper guards were used. The features list included: - Handbrake warning lamp - Key start ignition - Steering column cover - Delco-Remy generator - Knee-action front suspension - Directionals (Turn Signals) - Mechanical fuel pump - Dual downdraft carburetion - Slipper type pistons - Rubber engine mountings - Oversize brakes - Super Cushion tires - One-piece windshield - Intake silencer - 160 horsepower engine - Oil bath air cleaner - Equalized manifolding - Automatic choke - Luxury appointments. On the dashboard, "idiot lights" were used to monitor oil pressure and electrical charge rate instead of gauges. The smaller body was again used on 61s and again identified by the lack of full-length chrome underscores. However, a new medallion now appeared on the rear roof pillar of these cars, above the upper beltline molding. The 60 Special Fleetwood sedan was face-lifted to conform to the minor changes in other models. Eight vertical chrome louvers on the forward edge of the rear fenders continued to identify this car. All 1951 Cadillac's with full wheel discs featured a new type design lacking the popular Sombrero look. Hydra-Matic and power windows were standard on Sixty Specials. I. D. NUMBERS - Motor serial numbers 516000000 and up appeared on 1951 Series 60S models. Model Number: 51-60 Body Style: 4 Door Sedan Doors: 4 Seating: 6 Factory Price: $4142.00 Shipping Weight: 4136 lbs. The car truly defines the word "survivor", and represents an unmolested, virtually 100% stock example of the desirable Series 50 Cadillac Fleetwood. Not only is the car totally stock, it is equipped with most of the available options for the 1951 model year including; radio (and rear speaker!), rare rear defogger, power windows, power seat and whitewalls (wide, of course!). It even has a compass (works!) on the dash and the Kleenex box mounted on the passenger side of the lower dash. While the photographs would suggest that the car has undergone a restoration, In fact, it has not. Actually, our local Cadillac expert tells us that the entire car appears to have been the paint appears to be original, but our experts tell us that the car received a high quality, complete repaint many years ago. The paint is 2-stage and, as a result is considerably more durable and easy to "manage"and can be brought to a high gloss with professional buffing/waxing. Considering the age of the Cadillac, the paint is in beautiful condition and there are no signs of overspray. At first glance, the Cadillac certainly has the appearance of having its original paint. Also, we can find NO signs of accident damage, or previous damage to the car. When it comes to originality and the overall condition of this vintage Cadillac, true Cadillac aficionados will be truly amazed at the originality and condition of the interior, trunk area, and engine bay. It also appears as if the car is equipped with its original 331 c.i Cadillac engine and that the engine has never been out of the car. In fact, we have been told by two Cadillac experts that the mileage of 35,259 appears to be original based on the mechanical condition but most important the condition of the interior and other parts that can be used as a fairly reliable "gauge" for determining the mileage (especially if it is very low) on a vintage automobile. Our inspection would suggest that virtually all of the interior and exterior trim, chrome, stainless and other components (headlights, lenses, glass, etc) are original. The more time that we spend with the Fleetwood, the more we are amazed at not only the unique features of this highly optioned Cadillac (certainly for the day) but the originality and completeness of the car. We want to be very clear that this car is VERY original and comes complete with the typical minor cosmetic flaws and "patina" that one would expect from vehicle of this vintage that has survived in un-restored, well maintained condition for over 57 years. A few of the minor scratches in the paint have been touched up over the years, but the car remains free of major dents, damage and signs of accident damage. The paint is in very good condition and free from major flaws, cracking, crazing or other imperfections. It is an exceptionally well cared for/maintained car that truly had reportedly been owned by an elderly woman (Mrs. B.) for many, many years and had been in the possession of a collector who, as a result of financial difficulties, was forced to liquidate his collection of 1940's / 1950's collector cars. The following will provide the prospective buyer with additional, detailed information regarding the Cadillac's condition, and highlight the unique features on the elegant, Cadillac Fleetwood Series. Let us begin with some of the "luxury/comfort" options on the car. Most of these are shown in photographs, but may go unnoticed by those without considerable knowledge of the '51 Cadillac Fleetwood Series 60. This car has the following factory equipment: * In dash radio with "Selector" search feature & rear speaker (has power to radio and "selector" functions but no sound (?) * Fender mounted radio antenna (left fender) * Uniquely designed front & rear side vent windows * Beautiful, original painted dash with NO modifications and in excellent condition * Period compass on dash (appears to have been on car since new) * Dash gauges including temperature, oil pressure & amp gauge * Interior lights (Functional upon door opening and using manual switch on dash) * Very cool (a little play on words!) "Period" front sun visor * Fully functional windshield wipers, lights, turn signals and brake lights. When it comes to the condition of the Cadillac, the limited (believed to be two) previous owners have made a considerable commitment to maintain the car in original condition and the result is one of the most original examples of this vintage that we have seen in years. It is difficult to describe how truly original the "Cad" truly is, but consider that the following components appear (to us) to be totally original to this car: * All body panels (hood, trunk, doors & fenders) * Completely original interior, dash, gauges, steering wheel, clock, etc. The condition of these items is so good that it is hard to believe that they are original, but our Cadillac expert believes that they are, in fact, original. * NO signs of exterior body rust through, rot or damage. * Excellent exterior trim with only minor areas of surface pitting and few extremely small areas where the chrome is flaking (hardly noticeable without a close, critical inspection and so minor that photos will not reflect the minor imperfections). * Stainless steel body moldings (very good overall condition) * All original window glass in excellent condition * Bumpers (front & back) * Incredible front grill and Dagwood's (refer to write up) * Original headlight surrounds turn signal and tail light lenses * Gas cap hidden behind the left rear tail light lens (works perfectly) Also, car runs well on current grade of fuel and without additive. * Beautiful, original Cadillac emblems, front, rear & sides * Original hubcaps (showing some signs of light surface discoloration / pitting * Wide whitewall tires (including spare) * Original jack, tools & fasteners in trunk * Very clean, originally configured engine bay in 100% original configuration * Note the condition of engine bay wiring harness and other parts (all original) COSMETIC CONDITION Original, original, original!! The Cadillac will be appreciated by collectors/enthusiasts that are looking for (and truly appreciate) a well preserved example of one of the premier American cars of the era. After all it was Cadillac that came up with the slogan "Those who want the finest want - the Standard of the World!" This car is amazingly free from rust and is extremely solid. There is no rust in the typical locations (rocker panels, front and lower fenders, engine bay, trunk, etc.) And no indication that any repairs or filler has ever been used in these areas. The Cadillac has clearly led an easy life and its years of indoor storage and minimal use becomes apparent when you look at the overall condition of the car. While we were able to get the car on a lift, our peek underneath reveals only the typical light surface rust and no floor board rust through, frame rust, or damage. We are going to attempt to obtain photos of the undercarriage but due to the Holiday, may not have them available until after the eBay listing is posted. We grew up in the Midwest (Chicago) and are still amazed when we see cars of this vintage with no body rust/rot. The body is straight and free from any significant damage although the Cadillac has the normal minor scratches, and imperfections that one would expect on an all original car of this vintage. However, none of these minor imperfections in anyway detract from the overall appearance of the car, and many of the flaws are only noticeable upon a close, critical inspection of the car. The interior is virtually 100% original and the photographs accurately reflect the condition of the seats, dash, door panels, etc. The rear sets and entire rear area of the car is absolutely beautiful and free from damage and signs of excessive wear and tear. This is incredible for a car of this age and is an indication of the car that it has received. We ask that prospective buyers review the photos of the rear seat, headliner, side door panels and many of the uniqu interior items that are in place and in very good condition including: * The cord on the back of the front seat * The glass interior light cover (mounted on the ceiling/headliner) * The beautiful stainless trim on the bottom of each interior door * Fleetwood emblem on the dash * Cadillac horn button * Selecto radio * Beautiful rear packager shelf with defroster & speaker in tact * Lower sides of seats and seats in general The front seat is also original to the car and is also in beautiful condition with no signs of wear, rips, tears, stains or damage. It has been a very long time that we have had the pleasure of seeing a Cadillac with a complete and original interior that is this nice. We ask that you carefully review the photographs as they truly speak volumes about the overall quality of the interior. The front door panels are in excellent condition with one small tear on the lower front of the driver's side door. Outside of some stains on the carpet and portions of the door panels (that we have not made an effort to remove and believe that they may clean up), these areas are excellent as well. The beautiful chrome trim surrounding the windows is spectacular as is the stainless trim on the lower portions of each inner door (lower portion). The door handles, window handles are all original and in very good condition. The dash is beautiful and completely intact including the factory installed radio and speaker. The gauges are clear and the oil pressure, fuel gauge, amp and speedometer are fully functional. The temperature gauge is fully functional and the car does not even register half way on the gauge even in 100 degree California temperatures. The steering wheel is original, free from any cracks on the rim and in beautiful condition. The horn works. MECHANCAL CONDIITON The mileage showing on the Cadillac this writing is 35,259. While it is impossible to authenticate the mileage on a vehicle that is 57+ years old, several experts agree that this mileage appears to be authentic. We also have information (passed down from the previous owner) that the cars mileage is accurate. We can also report that the odometer is fully functional and there is no history of it being repaired / broken. Also, the mileage seems to be supported by the condition of the interior, body, trim and other components (engine bay). The car was recently inspected (within the past week) by a mechanic that specializes in early Cadillac's and other American cars of this vintage and it received a glowing "report card.": Specifically, what did he have to say about the Cadillac? His comments included "This '51 runs and drives better than any 50's Cadillac that I have seen in years" and "The car has obviously been very well maintained and it appears to me that the mileage on the car is actual." Seriously interested buyers will be provided the opportunity to talk with the repair/restoration facility that inspected the car if they choose. Please let us know if you would like to do so and we will put you in touch with the company. The objective inspection revealed very strong mechanical components. The following components were evaluated; engine, transmission, brakes, steering, suspension and electrical system. The only issues that were identified had to do with the car being stored for some time and requiring a minor tune-up (adjustment of choke, carburetor, etc.). Also, the power window system was low on hydraulic fluid and once it was topped off the windows became functional (the driver's side rear window is stuck in the down position and is not working but a quick inspection did not result in a diagnosis of the problem.) The reasons for the cars excellent mechanical condition becomes clear when you review the receipts contained in the file. While done some time ago, the following repairs were completed within an estimated 1,000 miles and addressed any and all issues with the Cadillac. The repair summary (too lengthy to list in great detail) is as follows: - Complete Overall Vehicle Inspection - Check wheel bearings, chassis and steering components - Adjust center link & change two cotter pins - Add oil to air filter, - Refresh oil / filter - Check and adjust master cylinder / add fluid - Check U- Joints & grease - Check & replenish all fluids in transmission, steering & brakes - Tighten transmission pan bolts 7 plug to eliminate leaks - Tighten all clamps - Oil generator & linkage - Clean breather - Check exhaust and repair front header pipe connection - Set carburetor & timing - Repair back up lights and license plate light - Replenish power window fluid and repair windows Test drive and evaluate condition of car. Written on the repair order are the following comments "Power & pick-up are very good, the mileage seems to be correct as it is shown on the odometer." We have driven the car (including the trip to the photo shoot location) and it is a pleasure to drive. The car starts immediately with a few pumps of the gas pedal and once it warms up (these old Cads are typically very cold blooded) runs and drives great. The Cadillac starts immediately when it is warm, as well. The engine on the Cadillac purrs like a kitten. There are no unusual noises and it idles smoothly and evenly. Another positive is the cars automatic transmission. Some of the old Cadillac's clunk and bang on the downshift (or up-shift, for that matter) but not this car. This "Cad" shifts seamlessly and the up-shifts and downshifts are precise but very smooth/positive. There is no noise in the rear4 end, or drive-line. Also, there does not appear to be any excessive rear end leakage, or major leaks (apart from the normal "seepage that can be expected on virtually all of the cars of this vintage) from the engine/transmission(apart from the normal "seepage that can be expected on virtually all of the cars of this vintage). The braking system was completely gone through within the previous 500 miles and converted to the reliable, safer hydraulic brakes at a cost of over $2100.00. As a result, the car stops well, straight and sure. All of the brakes lines were replaced brake backing plates bead blasted, new e-brake cables installed, etc. The installation is well done and the improvement is only apparent when you drive the Ford. VALUES......AUCTIONS...... MISCELLANEOUS The prices of nice, early Cadillacs continues to be strong. These cars fall into the classic category and true collectors recognize their long term investment potential. If history repeats itself, cars in this category will set records at some of the well-known auctions throughout the course of 2008, and set an even higher watermark for future sales of these cars. While we enjoy attending some of these auctions, frankly, we see some reasons to consider purchasing a collector car in a less frantic, less emotional setting. While we can't offer the cocktails and gourmet food found at some auctions, we are able to offer what we believe are much more important benefits. Unlike the live auctions where a car is simply driven past the crowd, we are able to provide the prospective buyer with important history on a particular car. We are also able to outline, in great detail, the specifics of recent repairs/updates, the condition of the car mechanically, along with a host of other significant facts that cannot be provided during the frenzy of a live auction. Many enthusiasts realize that the values of these cars continue to increase in value, but they are surprised at how much they appreciated during the past several years. Since we do not incur the costs associated with organizing a huge auction in Arizona (not to mention incurring the cost of those cocktails and appetizers!) we are able to offer this lovely Ford "Humpback" at a considerably lower price than we expect it would command at a large, live auction. In fact, as a result of the owner's circumstances the car needs to be sold as soon as possible, and at a very fair price for an original car of this caliber. DRIVING THE CADILLAC Simply stated, the Fleetwood is a pleasure to drive. It is a magnificent example that reminds us of the charm of automobiles of an earlier era. This car is appreciated by a wide range of enthusiasts for its originality and uniqueness. We have driven the car in the San Francisco Bay area, and it runs flawlessly under all conditions. The Cadillac runs cool, does not exhibit any problems, and the engine is silky smooth. The V8 emits a wonderful sound that is characteristic of the "Cad" V8. The transmission shifts perfectly. The Cadillac does not smoke, or leak excessive fluids. We must admit that driving this car around town does require a certain amount of patience. Why? Well, everywhere you go, plan on spending time answering questions about the car, its history, and get used to comments like "Whoa, cool!"? We forget that considering the age of the car, some of the "younger folks" have never driven, or even seen a '51 Fleetwood. For the more "mature enthusiast", it is difficult to believe, but true!! Great Fun, to be sure!! MISCELLANEOUS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) 1. Q. Has it received a safety / light inspection? A. Yes. 2. Q. Has the Cadillac been driven lately, or stored. A. The car has been used occasionally and while it had been stored for about 7-8 years (in an enclosed, California garage); the car has been running and driven regularly since with no problems. When not in use, it remains stored in an indoor, secure garage location, usually under cover. As our write-up reflects in some detail, it was inspected to ensure that there were no mechanical issues, overheating or running/driving problems. 3. Q. was the work completed by professionals? A. Yes. In the past several years, no "back yard" mechanics have completed repairs on this Cadillac. 4. Q. What were the results of the independent inspection? A. The car was found to be in excellent original condition and mechanically sound with only minor findings that were addressed (the only mechanical item that remains unrepaired is the left rear power window). 5 Q. What are the cars needs (if any) at this time? A. The vehicle is in beautiful condition mechanically and cosmetically and has minimal "needs" at this time (refer to . # 4 above). Cosmetically we would leave the car in its present condition though if we had to address something; it might be further cleanup / re-freshening of the trunk area. Frankly, we would not touch the body or modify the car but, based on current interests, some have considered the Cadillac as a potential low-rider or similar vehicle. 6. Q. Can we have the vehicle inspected? A. Absolutely, we encourage inspections of this Cadillac by seriously interested, qualified individuals, or professional inspection companies. All we ask is that you call us at 925-846-1451 to arrange a convenient time since we are in and out of our offices quite a bit. We are unable to allow inspections 24 hours prior to the end of the auction as we are closed on Sunday. 7. Q. Does the car have seat belts? A. No. Since seat belts were not mandatory for cars produced (put into service) in California in 1951, they are not required by law. Should the buyer have an interest in having seat belts installed, we could arrange to have seat belts put in the Cadillac at the buyer's expense. 8. Q. How is the car titled? A. The car carries a clear transferrable title that can be used in any part of the USA, or world for that matter. The car is, of course, smog exempt in California and in virtually every state that we know of. Note: the black California license plat is for display only. If sold within California new license / registration will be required. Out of state buyer's will recieve a clean, transferrable title. 9. Q. Can you provide some "ballpark" costs of shipping costs around the United States? A. Yes, on a fully insured, ENCLOSED carrier (we do not recommend the more common "open" transporters for a car of this type) and delivered to your door, about $1700.00 for most of the East Coast, $1500.00 to some of the Southern States, and around $1300 to the Midwest. The cost to Los Angeles would be approximately $650.00. PLEASE check with us as these are just estimates, NOT firm shipping costs, and rates are changing regularly due to fuel costs, exact locations, and other factors. NOTE: ALSO THESE ESTIMATED RATES TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE CARS "LARGER THAN AVERAGE SIZE." 10. Is the car ready to drive / use on a regular basis? Yes. However, while the tires show considerable tread, they are older. Tire manufacturers suggest replacing tires once they become more than several years old, even if the tread appears to be OK. PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet. We believe that it is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, but not limited to: - How long have they been in business? - How much experience do they have with collector cars? - How many positive collector car vehicle sales have completed (positive EBay feedback)? - How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle? - Do the photos show details of the interior, exterior, top, chrome, etc. or are they simply "Glamour Shots" taken from a distance? - Does the seller have a surety bond to protect the financial transaction? - What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license? - Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances? - Do they enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation? - Can the seller assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales?
