Did you miss our last “don’t ask the wife—just pick up and call” car? That was a Corvette convertible, too, and it lasted nearly 14 full hours! Well, here’s the next one—a beautiful all-numbers-matching, 45,000 original mile, 427-390hp, four speed, International Blue 1968 Corvette—the first of the “shark” C3 bodies! With a mild cosmetic restoration completed only six months ago and packed full of Rat power, it’s ready to take on shows, back country roads or the competition at the stoplight drags!
Start outside—the paint is flat out gorgeous! After the restoration was completed, the owner wasn’t happy with the paint on the car, and had it taken back apart and repainted again! It’s that nice! Panel gaps are tight, and are excellent by Corvette standards. Coker F70x15 redlines are mounted to the only deviation from new—rallye wheels—and that’s an upgrade from wheel covers if I’ve ever seen one!
Now let’s talk about the trim. The bumpers, tail light bezels, emblems and letters are 100% original and unrestored. And, they are absolutely beautiful … a testament to the actual miles on the car, and the way this Corvette was stored and maintained. The gills in the fenders are brand new, and the grilles are restored. All glass is original to the car, and in excellent condition. There are absolutely no cracks in the fiberglass, nor are there waves in the paint. The convertible top is in excellent shape, and looks awesome in white against the deep blue exterior. There were only 2,473 International Blue cars made in total, so this isn’t a common color. Couple that with the rare medium blue interior and you’ve got quite an unusual vehicle on your hands!
Open the hood to find the original, numbers matching 390hp L36 427 V8, with its CORRECT IL block with the CORRECT VIN, CORRECT 7028209 FG carb, CORRECT 3937793 aluminum Winters intake manifold and CORRECT 1111294 distributor! There’s no doubt on this one! The original chrome air cleaner and distributor cover couple with the chrome valve covers to add interest while a fresh tune up with correct steel braided spark plug wires and the rebuilt carb keep things running smoothly. GM hoses with tower clamps work with the re-cored radiator and new reproduction cap to keep the fluids in check while the large machined alternator pulley keeps the belt in line. There’s a new master cylinder here, which is the tip of the brake rebuild iceberg for this car.
Underneath, the frame’s been blasted and repainted the correct chassis black. There are new suspension pieces everywhere, the brakes were completely gone through (mandatory for a Corvette) and all body mounts are new. There’s a brand new exhaust system from the correct exhaust manifolds to the proper exhaust tips. The spare tire is where it should be, and the cover is in excellent shape. The original AT heavy duty 3.08:1 differential is in place out back complete with its original positraction tag on the fill plug, and there are new brake and fuel lines everywhere. This was a clean car prior to its restoration, so a lot of components could be reused for originality’s sake, and that counts on a car that just turned 40!
Open the door and get inside. You’re staring at a beautiful, fully restored interior, starting with the new seats you’re sitting in. the dash is mint, the gauges all work as designed, and the fiber optics are fully functional. The door panels are beautiful, the carpet and correct Corvette-logoed floor mats are new as is the carpet in the rear hatch area. The radio pulls in both AM and FM stations with clarity, and all lights and switches work as you’d expect them to on a 45,000 mile car. The original jack and positraction labels are still in the right cargo cubby!
Calling yet? This is an awesome, big block, four speed, numbers matching C3 convertible, and it’s priced better than right! This Corvette’s a very cool color, with a very unusual interior, and the fit and finish is excellent! We’ll see how far past the 14 hour mark this one lasts!
