Vehicle Description Here’s another great Mopar in the “what the heck???” mold! Ma sure did bolt together a few odd ones, and this one’s way up there! Take a high line SE model, add a luggage rack, leather seats and a color matched vinyl top. OK so far…maybe a little boring, but OK. Well, then add the R/T package, upgrade it to the V code 440 Six Pack motor, add hood pins, the extra heavy duty Hemi suspension with front and rear sways and 15” rallyes. That’s weird, eh? OK, well don’t install the floor center console (despite the roof console that comes with the SE) and delete the stripes! Talk about a Jekyll and Hyde car! Here’s the fender tag: V21 V68 Y05 26 EN2 M91 N41 N42 N85 R11 G31 G33 J45 M21 M25 M31 V1X A36 A62 B51 C26 C55 TX9 HRK4 000 B16 xxxxxx E87 D32 JS29 V0B xxxxxx And broken down: JS29: Dodge Challenger Special, R/T 2 Door Sports Hardtop (SE) V0B: 440 390HP 3-2BBL 8 CYL, 1970 Dodge Main, Hamtramck, MI, USA E87: 440 cid 3x2 barrel V8 (High Performance) 390hp D32: Heavy Duty Automatic Transmission TX9: Black Exterior Color HRK4: Trim - High, Leather Bucket Seats, Burnt Orange 000: Full Door Panels B16: Build Date: November 16 V1X: Full Vinyl Top, Black A36: Performance Axle Package w/3.55 Ratio A62: Rallye Instrument Cluster Package B51: Power Brakes C26: Consolette w/Formed Headlining C55: Bucket Seats G31: OS RH Manual Racing Mirror G33: LH Remote Racing Mirror J45: Hood Tie Down Pins M21: Roof drip rail moldings M25: Wide sill moldings M31: Belt Moldings M91: Luggage Rack N41: Dual Exhaust N42: Chrome Exhaust Tips N85: Tachometer R11: Radio Solid State AM (2 Watts) V21: Performance Hood Treatment V68: Longitudinal Stripes, Deleted Y05: Build to USA Specs 26: 26in Radiator EN2: End of Sales Codes On top of that, the broadcast sheet shows W21 Rallye Wheels with U62 F60-15 Polyglas tires, S15 extra heavy duty Hemi suspension with front and rear sway bars, S77 power steering, R31 rear speaker, G11 full tinted glass, and it’s a Y13 dealer demo car! OK so the dealer demo car explains a lot… Oftentimes, Chrysler and other companies would load cars up with a mishmash of their new options to show what’s available to order, even if the car’s total equipment package seems to make no sense! I know there are a pile of people who really like the “popular” options in lockstep (high impact colors, black interior, all the stripes, etc.) but I prefer the weird ones! There are so many choices Mopar offered, and after looking at so many cars I’m completely drawn to odd combinations above all else! Pull up at a car show with this car, find a couple Mopar “experts” and watch their eyes bug out of their heads when they scan the fender tag! So enough about the build: How’s the car? Black on black on black exterior is the only way to go, from the top to the paint to the hood blackout. SE’s have a boatload of trim from the formal rear window to sill, belt, tail and wheel lip moldings, and it’s all in great shape. The rear finish panel, which is both SE specific and nearly always destroyed is in excellent shape with no damage and sports a fresh coat of textured argent. The wheel lip and rocker moldings are new as are the emblems. Only minor pitting marks the luggage rack and fuel caps but both are still very presentable. The vinyl top is new and its trim is in excellent shape. Deep gloss black paint coats the straight body and looks good from every angle. The grille is very nice and the bumpers are rechromed. B F Goodrich Radial T/A’s in 235/60/15 wrap the restored rallye wheels with new trim rings. This is a car that turns heads! Inside you’ll find new seat covers front and rear from Legendary, as well as a new ACC carpet, a mint rim blow steering wheel redone by Gary’s Steering Wheels, new sill plates, a new package tray, an uncracked, very nice dash pad, restored door panels and new window cranks and inside door handles. Whew! The gauges all work and the SE overhead console and formed headliner is in great shape. no center console makes for a wide open interior, which I appreciate as I’m tall and usually find E bodies to be cramped! Scan underneath and find clean, rust free sheet metal. The 8 ¾ rear with its 3.55 gears does its job without complaint, taking power from the tight automatic transmission. A newer dual exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers and original chrome tips poking out the rear valance not only looks great but sounds nice and throaty. The brakes have been gone through as has the suspension. There’s nothing overdone here—this is a car that can and is meant to be driven! Open the trunk to find a collapsible spare tire, the complete jack assembly and a new trunk mat. You’ll also see the rear window defroster and the rear speaker in there, too! Pop the hood and find a date-code correct (but not numbers matching) 440 Six Pack motor that’s well detailed. Fresh Hemi Orange paint covers the mill while the exhaust manifolds are coated with Eastwood high temp compound. The air cleaner’s the correct one with the shield up front (they’re different for fresh air-equipped cars.) Also in there is a brand new, high-dollar 956 radiator from Glen-Ray and a new group 27 “red cap” battery. New radiator hoses, Mopar heater hoses, Corbin clamps throughout, a new engine wiring harness and electronic ignition are also there for your perusal. Freshly tuned the car’s a runner, and the Six Pack looks awesome when the hood’s popped! Ready for a turn towards the Twilight Zone of Mopars? I can see Rod Serling, straight faced, telling tales of luggage racks on Six Pack cars, of the stripe delete R/T SE whose order sheet was filled out in a mysterious haze, plucking options out at random and creating a fire breathing, one-of-one monster!
