Vehicle Description
1948 FORD F-1 Project
This truck was driven as a street rod
until 1987. It was last registered in
1990. It has a 5' top chop, a 4"
channel and a 4' section across the
firewall, so that the fenders stay
at stock height, while the body
is dropped over where the running-
boards were removed.
The front suspension is 1968
Ford Torrino with discs. This
suspension was grafted on in
1972. The rear suspension is
1990 Mustang, coil with 4 shocks
joined to a 9" Ford with 3.90
gears and drum brakes. The
frame/wheelbase has been
shortened 12" so that when the
bed is shortened to match, the
bedsides will be the same length
as the fenders. There are two sets
of rear fenders. One is '48 F-1 style
and the other is '56 F-100 style.
There are two hoods and neither
one has been trimmed to fit the
fender/cab arrangement.
The top chop and body mods were
performed by Contemporary
Metalcraft in Vacaville, Ca.
Everything was hammer welded
and there is probably less than
a quart of filler on the top which
can be seen from inside the cab.
The motor mounts are set up for
a 5.0 Ford and 5 speed. The fuel
tank is a '57 Chevy with a sump
for the fuel inj. fuel pump. Any
stock '57 tank will fit the mounts.
An exhaust system was installed
but never used. It fits the stock
5.0 headers.
A rollcage with door bars was
installed. The dash has been drilled
for Stewart Warner guages.
It needs brake/fuel lines and
electrical. Most of the fabrication
work has been done. It just needs
to be finished, and it's not that
far from being a Rat Rod now.
The comparison photos show
the stock body, and the other
photo has been cut to the
finished dimensions according
to the plan.
The title has been lost, but the
truck has been out of the DMV
system since 1990, so a duplicate
title should be easy to obtain.
