The H2's 122.8-inch wheelbase is nearly 7 inches longer than the Tahoe's. The wheels are positioned at the extreme corners, and the H2 has a 69.4-inch track width. High approach and departure angles permit driving directly into a hole and out again. The BorgWarner four-wheel-drive system includes a Low range. It provides a 40/60-percent front/rear torque split in High Open mode, which changes to 50/50 percent when the transfer-case differential is locked. Five four-wheel-drive modes are controlled electronically. A 33-1 crawl ratio is available for serious rock climbing.
Traversing Moab, Utah's Poison Spider Mesa and Golden Spike trails, you don't encounter too many large, family-size SUVs. And for good reason: Some of the sandstone monoliths you drive over on these Class 4 and higher trails are as big as condominiums.
Generally speaking, SUVs are better left back at the condo you live in. But here we were, confidently, comfortably creeping along in low range in the company of Jeeps, Land Rovers, and Land Cruisers in an all-new Hummer H2 that's based on General Motors' full-size truck componentry.
