WAS an excellent Grand Cherokee until I “sold” it to a young lady for $4500 on credit in August 2007. I am the 2nd owner of the jeep (not counting the lady) and to my knowledge, the car has never been in an accident. Car had just been tuned and was running great. 10 months later (last week), I got the Grand Cherokee back with severe engine problems. Here’s the diagnosis from a mechanic who specializes in Jeeps.
Test drove and found low power and poor performance. Inspect engine and noted oil film coated all over engine bay and engine. Oil also noted on outer panels, wheels, exhaust and other exterior parts of vehicle. Performed compression test and discovered #5 cylinder has no compression. All other cylinders are at minimum. Wet test performed also. Same results, no change. Engine has excessive major compression blow-by as well as oil leaks. Also noted is slight engine knock. Motor needs replaced. Inspect electronics and found distributor with excessive rotor side to side play. Shaft is worn and bearings are bad. Inspect all other engine components and found all rubber hoses and belts to be oil soaked and swelled. Intake system has excessive major oil pooled in the air filter and throttle body. Transmission and other drivetrain components seem sound.
Other than the engine problems, the jeep is in excellent shape. The a/c was serviced and operational in August 2007 and appears to still be sound. The interior is still in excellent shape with normal wear after 14+ years. The electric seats and windows are still in excellent operating condition. The exterior has no problems except for a broken side lens on the right light and broken running lights on the front. There is some fading paint above the rear hatch on the roof edge. The tires are in excellent shape with approximately 15,000 miles. The 4x4, when I last used it, worked perfectly in getting me out of 1' snow in the winter (without chains). The radio works although the CD is no longer operational.
This jeep would make an excellent project if a person wants to put it back in running condition. The jeep is still RUNNING but obviously no guarantee on how long that will continue. I drove it approximately 40 miles back to my residence at speeds over 50 mph. If you are looking to "part" this out, the body panels, tires, etc. make this a good buy!
I reside in southwest Colorado between Durango and Pagosa Springs so make a family vacation out of the trip to pick up the jeep. Happy bidding!
