1966 Series IIA Land Rover. I am the third owner of this is very original Land Rover Station Wagon. It is a very early 1966 model that was manufactured in 1965 and sold in 1965 and is a black plate California truck. I still have a copy of the last title issued to the last owner in 1972. The doors all lock including the rear door and I have all the ORIGINAL keys. Before I purchased the truck it was in the Redding area of CA and was last driven and registered in 1976. I spent about two years taking it completely apart replacing every piece of rubber, cork, and cleaning/replacing everything that needed replacing and putting it all back together with 99% of its original parts. Yep, I cleaned and replaced almost every original bolt. There is no rust proofing, there are a few very small dings in the body but I left them as I did not want to do any body work. No monkey-fix electronics all original or replace with proper part. Even the trailer light plug is hooked up. The odometer does not work. It is the original speedo that stopped at 29,000. I have two spare speedometers if you want to change it. Other than that everything works, including the beautiful Smiths round heater and wiper motors. The truck starts right up and has 60 pounds of oil pressure at the start and will run 50 pounds when warm at idle. I checked the cylinder pressures and while I can’t remember what the pressure was they were all within 5 psi of each other. The engine was not rebuilt. I was told it had only 50,000 miles on it and I believe it based on my experience driving it. I added the proper Fairey (FW) Overdrive Part No. 811/RTC8020 and have the hand crank, original jack, and obtained a (Rare) Lucas inspection light. The deluxe elephant hide interior was ordered from ExmoorTrim in Somerset UK at a cost of about $1,500.00. The rear seats have not been re-upholstered and they are in the original elephant hide and are complete. I would have them redone with a piece of elephant hide from ExmoorTrim if you wanted more of a show truck. The seat belts are original. It needs a new headliner. The headliner in the back is dirty and had a small tear. The one in the front was cut out but the frame is provided. Just needs a piece of material. I have all the trim pieces for the inside of the Safari top and inside the cab (very rare to see one decked out like this) This truck is the luxury model (Ha!) even has the optional ashtray in foe burl nut wood. Warren Lockout hubs were installed for better drivability reduced wear and a new Webber carb was also installed. I have the original carb that works fine too. It is fitted with a Pertronics electronic ignition for reliability. As a bonus I have a tailgate and all the fittings just in case you want to remove the Safari top! I have an extensive file of receipts to show all the new parts installed. I will list some of them:
All new window and door seals (very expensive and difficult to install!!)
Fuel pump
Manifold gasket and bolts
Engine hoses
Wipers
Roof and body seals including Alpine widows
Windshield
Exmoor Interior (beautiful!)
Engine mounts
All new suspension bushings
Shocks
Universal joints
Drive shaft seals
Rebuilt both axles hub to hub (bearings and all seals).
All new brakes, drums, pads, slaves and master
muffler
Paint by Microfinish LLC
Fuse box
Pedal pads
Vent seals
Wing mirrors
8 (eight) New tires
Suspension straps
Interior rubber boots
New lamps (where needed)
tailgate
This is a very nice (and fun!) driving truck that you will enjoy but it is still a truck that is over 45 years old and drives like a 1966 truck. I have never driven it off-road but all 4 wheel drive hi/low gears work properly. Despite the fact I replaced all the gaskets it still drips oil from the oil pan and rear transfer case through the emergency brake drum seal. The British simply could not make a vehicle that did not leak oil.
This truck comes with a pile of extra parts….too many to list but my estimate is about $2,000 worth (conservative estimate) FOUR spare tires alone is about $350 - $400. Spare Grill, gaskets, bolts, axle, two differentials, drive shafts, Smiths wiper motors, these are substantial spare parts not just a paper gasket or two. I even have a spare over/under oil pressure gauge – very rare that will go with the truck. I know this truck very well …please ask me any questions. You will be happy with your decision if your purchase this truck. Anything is only worth what someone will pay for it and while I must have over $20,000 into this truck I will start the bidding at a ridiculously low opening bid and NO reserve. I hope it is purchased at a reasonable price by someone who loves these classic and rare trucks.
Thanks for all the inquiries this week and I hope to answer all the questions before the end of the auction. For those of you who are unfamiliar with a Series Land Rover and have never driven one please note that while they can be very reliable and fun to drive they are very basic automobiles built to compete with the Jeep CJ. They ride rough, the transmissions are crude but bullet proof with four speeds and no syncro in 1st gear. The transfercase is a work of art with hi/lo gears and 4wd in and out. Combine that with the overdrive and there are too many gear options to even talk about. With that said this is about as basic a vehicle as you can find. As mentioned earlier the ash tray was considered a luxury option. Don't expect to use this as a highway commuter car....it is comfortable at speeds between 40-50 mph or 50-60 using the overdrive, but with increased road and transmission noise(normal for Fairey). This vehicle is probably the best hunting/fishing truck on the planet due to its short wheel base and extreme capabilites in low range. This particular truck was restored by be me to drive and to last for a long time with the best parts...but when it comes down to it... the technology is still old... so I want to make sure the buyer knows what they are buying. I've tried to represent this vehicle and its condition as accurately as possible and encourage you if you are seriously considering buying to ask me questions. I will be upfront and honest and answer any question to the fullest. thanks and happy bidding.
