~ A Yelp review from one of our past customers ~ Thanks Jessi with an i ~
"It's been just over a year since I bought my car, and I'm still thinking about how much I love this dealership. In fact, I just reminded myself to send them a Christmas card. That's how much I love them.
Having never shopped for or financed a car entirely on my own, and having heard for years the urban-legend-slash-horror-story warnings about going out into the big scary auto universe without a strong manly man to protect me from the dealership vultures, I dug my heels in, made sure I knew what I wanted and how much I was willing to pay for it, and went a-shopping.
There were, indeed, several dealership vultures out there (note to them: when I say I'm looking for a Passat or an A4, I AM NOT LOOKING FOR A TOYOTA COROLLA KTHX) and one of them actually tried to guilt-trip me into staying and "talking" after I said I was leaving (no, buddy, you were not "just trying to be nice". You were trying to pawn off the Jetta that's probably been on your lot since Clinton's innauguration because it's a P.O.S., and I wasn't having it.) and after a month of "dealing" I was ready to pack it in and buy a new pair of sneakers instead. Suddenly the head louse on the BART train seemed less "EW GROSS GET IT AWAY GET IT AWAY" and more "I shall name him Sir Franklin III and knit him a tiny scarf".
Then, I found my pretty pretty baby on Craigslist. The minute I opened the ad I knew she was the one for me -- a one-owner silver fox (8 years old but young at heart) with only 92k miles and all of the original paperwork. The ad was incredibly detailed with a ton of pictures and full disclosure regarding the very minimal cosmetic wear and tear. She would be mine. Oh yes; She would be mine.
I called Drivebid and spoke with Michael, who told me they were closing soon but that he'd be happy to come back after hours so that I could test-drive the car. +1 Brownie Point. When I got there, I realized it wasn't a big gaudy used car lot in the stereotypical sense, but rather a cluster of parking spaces around a small office building. +1 Brownie Point (as I'd come to associate big car lots with the feeling of my knuckles turning white as a result of the deathgrip I maintained on my checkbook while being led like a lamb to slaughter through one of those places). Then, he told me about the car in a very honest, candid manner and spoke to me as a fellow adult. No "Howdy lil' miss, what color buggy you lookin' to buy today? Feel free to give the ol' tires a kick, and don't you mind that gasoline smell. That's just her way o' sayin' she likes ya." vibe from him, which was refreshing. +1 Brownie Point. I drove the car and loved her as much as I knew I would. Decided to go forward with the purchase, and Michael turned everything in the office back on and took care of it that night. When I expressed concern about whether or not I could cover the difference between the amount BECU would finance and the total price of the car, he brought the price down. Yeah, I know that's how it's supposed to go, but it was so *painless*. I didn't feel like I was bargaining. It was a conversation, not a battle. And the thing is... the car was already priced well to begin with. Like... really well. So for him to bring it down even further...? +2 Brownie Points.
Everything was almost set, except that I had to get the check from BECU in order to officially make the purchase. This was easy enough (or so I thought), because I was flying home to Seattle in a matter of days and would be able to take care of the financial end of things while I was here. Michael was OK with holding the car and considering it "sold" while I wrapped everything up. +2 Brownie Points.
So I flew home, got everything taken care of (BECU review coming soon to a monitor near you), and in true Jessi with an i style I left the "blankity" check in my friend's car and flew back to California without it.
I suck.
I sheepishly explained the situation to Michael and Katerina, who assured me they would continue to hold the car, and who remained gracious when others may have said "Sucks to be you!" and sold the car right then.
A few days later, I received a new check in the mail and gave them a call. Katerina offered to drive the car to the BART station to meet me. +1 Brownie Point.
Less than an hour later, I was driving off into the sunset (No, seriously. I was driving West as the sun was going down.) with a big fat grin on my face and a very special place in my heart for Drivebid.
PS: They also sell cars to out-of-state buyers via eBay, which explains their incredibly detailed ads and willingness to divulge any negative aspects of the car -- cosmetic, mechanical, and otherwise."
