Auction is for 1 very special rare 1971 MGB GT. This car has been in storage since 1996 in a dry climate controlled warehouse. The car has always been stored indoors never outside!!! This is probably one of the straightest bodies we have seen for an MGB GT. There are many cars out there that look great but are rust buckets, after all these cars are almost 40 years old and have not always been respected like they are today. This a true one owner southern car that was owned by none other than the owner of the local MG DEALERSHIP. It was bought by him personally and special ordered as his personal toy. Factory color Flame red, Trim black body no. 525913 Rear axle 98226 steering lock key 2125 other keys 903. Car was built between May 24-25 1971, it left the MG factory lot May 28th 1971 IN Abingdon England. The factory options on the car are listed as Wire Wheels, Heater, Cigar lighter, Radial ply Whitewall tires or tyres in England! It also had port installed original air conditioning all the vents with chrome bezels are there as well as the plumbing but the a/c compressor has been removed. I know all this because I have the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust archive library documents for this car dated April 1986 of course, it will be included with the car.
This car was not owned by dealer mechanic, sales man, but the owner of an MG JAGUAR ALFA ROMEO dealership it was his personal toy and he really loved it and even after MG pulled out in 1980 he worked on the car himself. The car has overdrive now a rare option that works great!! Rebuilt overdrive transmissions sell for over $3,000 by themselves from catalog companies. It also has the very rare and sought after Ansa dual tip exhaust system which is no longer available. The engine was rebuilt after a faulty water pump caused it to overheat in the mid 1980's with larger pistons and a mild race cam that sounds great with the exhaust! Auxillary gauges were added for oil pressure and water temperature. The car was also fitted with very expensive Cibie 130 watt headlamps about $300 at the time! Huge hella driving lamps were also installed in the early 1980's the covers plastic protectors are crumbling due to age, THE LAMPS THEMSELVES ARE MINT AND LOOK BRAND NEW WITH THE STICKERS THEY HAVE NEVER REALLY BEEN USED! There also Bosch halogen fog lamps under the bumper You can really light up a billboard from a mile away!! A heavy duty Motorola alternator was installed to handle this there is no way a stock Lucas alternator would produce enough amps to handle just the driving lamps. The car also has a competition front air dam spoiler to top all that off!! I think he had racing on his mind!! This car has a competition rollbar in back really neat there is a fire extinguisher don't depend on it though there is a tag where it was recharged 1986 is the date but it looks neat! A huge electric fan mounted in front of the radiator makes shure this tweaked motor does not overheat! The car also has rear swaybars for handling. The car had new barely driven Pirelli p6 tires but it has been sitting for 11 years undriven so it has flat spots (the tires have sat so long that when you get around 30-40mph it gets bumpy you will need new ones.
Other than those performance modifications that I know about (money was not a problem evidently when performance was concerned) The car is amazingly original. I know that sounds odd considering all the goodies it has. an overdrive transmission was added in the mid 1980's the car has a perfect leather steering wheel 3-spoke original seats no rips or tears or discoloration rear seat is there (there is a small split in passenger side headrest easily sewn back. original black carpet looks great even in cargo area. Original Kangol British Leyland seatbelts for all passengers in great condition. original trunk mat even original rubber footwell mouldings, rubber Amco floor mats with MG emblems are there. All gauges and warning lights look great including dash which has a 30th anniversary scca MG racing plaque mounted on it. Car has all 5 wire wheels with holdown in trunk. Odometer shows 26,332 miles which I believe may be correct, this car was not driven by anyone but the owner and his oldest son nobody else alowed! I have no way of proving it though so I have to sell the car with the understanding that the mileage is unknown.
This car is rock solid no rust holes or bubbles sounds great and will drive I retrieved it from the warehouse were it has been stored it was very dusty and I washed it with soap and water I did not wax it or have anyone go over it with armor all or polish the paint should buff out nice with some good wax. I put fresh gas in it installed a Brand new S.U. fuel pump last week I also bought a new Interstate battery, replaced the starter and water pump all last week. We also cleaned out carbs they have chrome housings to. Probably best to tune them up to see the true potential of this car. Drove it 3 times tested overdrive engine really sounds like a beast. floorboards are rock solid bodywise in excellent shape as far as rust and damage. Car comes with mirrors not mounted on car tag lamps battery holdown bracket, nos cloth braided door seal mg license plate holder, the missing wiper arm and blade new trunk seal in bag along with factory workshop manual and some misc. parts that were in trunk. Chances to get cars this old in this condition are getting rare especially with this combination of rare modifications, factory options this condition and history!!! If you want to see the car in person, please contact us we want you to see this car nothing to hide here. We have been selling MG parts for almost 30 years check out the Factory MG dealership sign it is the same sign that was on the building were this car was delivered in 1971.
Titles are not required in the state of Alabama prior to 1974. We can provide you with a bill of sale on company letterhead I do have a tag that was on the car in 1986 if that helps. payment due within 5 days of auction close. The vehicle must be picked up within 2 weeks unless other arrangements are made. Please ask any questions before bidding. Thanks!!!
