Absolutely Lovely 1954 MG TF 1954 MG TF Orignal California Car - Recent Complete "Frame Off" Restoration Absolutely Striking in Red with Buscuit Interior, Top & Curtains ____________________________________________ Thank you for visiting our auction. We realize that this listing is VERY long. Since we sell the majority of our vehicles to out of state/country buyers that are unable to view our in person, they encourage as much detail as possible when it comes to descriptions and photographs. If you find the narrative to be too lengthy, we encourage you to review the "Specifications" section along with the 100~ photographs of the MG TF.. Another option is to call us to discuss the car. We'll be glad to answer your questions pertaining to shipping, a "pre-auction" purchase, condition of the MG, etc. Thank you! Classic Cars Ltd. ________________________________________ 1955MG TF Absolutely Lovely with Red Exterior / Biscuit Interior Complete body off Restoration of an Original California Car ____________________________________________________ HISTORY OF THE MG TF This press release highlights the "new" MG TF features/benefits to prospective buyers prior to the cars release in late 1953. Referred to as the "Midget", the new version of the MG offered improved performance, handling, and comfort The release read as follows: STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL AND NOT FOR PUBLICATION BEFORE FRIDAY, 16TH OCTOBER [1953] NEW VERSION OF RENOWNED SPORTS CAR M.G. "TF" MIDGET (TF) HAS GREATER POWER A restyled body with a more idealized shape, increased power output, and detail modifications to improve comfort and accessibility are among the many outstanding features of the new M.G. TF Midget announced by The Nuffield organization today. The alterations were carried out after careful research in world markets, especially in the United States where 25,000 M.G. Midgets have been sold since 1946. A cross section of consumer-dealer opinions showed that eighty per cent of M.G. owners do not want their cars for competition or racing, but do demand a high performance capability combined with durability and traditionally smooth riding. The engine is basically the same efficient, reliable 1250 c.c. unit, but the power output has been increased to 57.5 bhp at 5,500 rpm. It is, in fact, the Mk. II engine formerly offered as an alternative in the T.D. model. This has been achieved by raising the compression ratio to 8:1 and using twin S.U. carburetors of 1½" diameter with enlarged inlet ports. Extra large valves (inlet 36 mm. exhaust 34 mm.) are fitted with 150 lb. valve springs to enable engine speeds up to 6,000 rpm to be attained without valve bounce. The radiator, retaining the distinctive appearance of the Marque, curves back to meet the downward. slope of the bonnet and the front wings have been reshaped to shroud the headlamps. The bonnet sides are now fixed valances and the centre-hinged top is opened easily and quickly by two push buttons on either side. The 12 gallon fuel tank, with quick release filler cap, has also been reshaped to bring it lower and this greatly contributes to the new over-all line of the car. A map-reading light is included in the instruments now grouped in the centre of the dashboard panel - on either side of which is an open glove box - and the electric drive motor for the twin-blade windscreen wiper is concealed beneath the scuttle. Direction indicators are now fitted, with the switch on the dashboard. This model is available either with steel disc wheels or with knock-on wire wheels at a moderate additional cost. Optional extras include badge bar, fog lamp and luggage carrier, which may be obtained through M.G. retailers. The 'T.F." is available in black with red, green or biscuit upholstery, M.G. red with red or biscuit upholstery, green with green or biscuit upholstery and ivory with red or green upholstery. Source: The Nuffield organization, Central Publicity Department, Cowley, Oxford ADDITIONAL COMMENTS ON THE MG TF (1953-1955) The MG TF received a friendly reception when it was introduced but it wasn't until more recently that the "TF" was recognized as a much more attractive, usable car than the earlier T Series cars. In fact, when released, the British buyer's and reviewer's gave the TF very positive marks. Autocar magazine said "The TF has been restyled to produce a much cleaner external appearance though retaining the MG Midget characteristics;" while The Motor opined that "the MG Midget open sports 2-seater has been very much improved for 1954." When released, the MG F was certainly not inexpensive at $2,250 USD (if we could only know then what we know now!), MG had no trouble selling the car when it was first released. Critics agreed that the TF was a good car, well-built and thoughtfully equipped although perhaps not as "modern" as some of its rivals. The charm of the car, its wire wheels, open air feel and styling made up for its lack of brute acceleration and race car handling. There is little question that there was no lack of attention paid to those seen driving / riding in a TF, even in the 50's! Top Speed: 85 mph+ Production Estimates: One of only 6,200 cars manufactured HISTORY THIS PARTICULAR 1954 MG TF This absolutely lovely, "frame off" restored MG TF has been owned by a local British car collector / enthusiast for over 10 years. The car was purchased from a long time Bay area owner and has been in California for its entire life. This MG, in addition to his other specialty vehicles, has been painstakingly restored to its beautiful, original condition (actually to an even "better than new state") over the course of several years. The car has seen minimal use and has accumulated an estimated 1,000 miles during the previous 10~ years with the majority of those miles accumulated on sunny California Sunday's (traveling to British Car Meets / Concourse events and shows). Regrettably, at this time the MG TF is being offered for sale as a result of the owner's need to reduce his number of vehicles and due to a move to an adjacent state to retire. the size of his collection of automobiles. It is the previous owners hope that the MG will go to a new owner that will appreciate the car as much as he has and can continue to enjoy it and share it with other enthusiasts at local car shows. This MG TF is an example that is ready to be entered into shows, used for parades, or simply enjoyed for those special occasions. 1954 MG TF - THIS PARTICULAR CAR # 5276 Frankly, the photographs speak volumes about the condition of this MG TF. The car has undergone a complete and total "Body Off" restoration that was completed to a high standard. The MG's owner was not only a perfectionist, but also a knowledgeable, long time British car collector/enthusiast that did much of the "dirty work" himself, but engaged professionals as necessary to complete the restoration and ensure that the car satisfied his high standards. The finished product reflects substantial time commitment (not to mention the monetary investment) to make this one of the prettiest MG TF's that we have seen in many years. During the thorough restoration, virtually every component was inspected and replaced/refurbished as needed, but every effort was made to utilize factory original components. The car even has its correct (#'s correspond with the ID #'s) engine! The use of aftermarket parts on this car was minimized and the re-plating and refurbishing of component parts is very high quality. This car is, in many respects, better than when it left the factory. HIGHLIGHTS / FEATURES OF THE MG INCLUDE: * Body removed from frame (refer to photos) & all components were stripped, cleaned and repaired as needed. Then, all of the components were repainted / restored (including engine bay, chassis, etc.) Note: the car was a very solid, original example that was originally delivered to a California dealer (More on that later) * This MG TF has a correct, numbers matching engine (# 34783 on Engine Tag & on the MG ID plate (located in the engine compartment) Note; attempts were made to photograph the brass plate on the engine but due to its location, a photo could not be taken. However, we could clearly read the #. * Absolutely striking paint & body work with high gloss and virtually no orange peel, cracking, crazing, etc. in paint *Original rust free California car with no body damage * No signs of damage to the chassis or underside of the MG TF * Mechanical components evaluated, refurbished and repairs completed as needed (Engine totally disassembled, machined & rebuilt) * Re-chromed / replaced exterior components including windshield, frame, brackets, brake handle, lights and many other parts * New rubber trim, fender beading (dark, coordinating red), exterior bits (some original exterior parts (i.e. tail lights left in place if in excellent original condition (and with the desired, appropriate patina) * Beautiful, like new cloth convertible top * Convertible top bows restored and easy to operate making raising and lowering of the top very straightforward (compared with many of the TD's that we have had in the past) * Original vinyl side curtains color matched to interior / convertible top * Totally stock dash, gauges & fully functional electrical system (including the horn & turn signals) * Beautiful, original steering wheel * Original dash plaque reflecting delivery to San Leandro, CA..A VERY nice touch * New wiring harness installed * Original jack and what appears to the front crank tool included and in storage compartment in the front engine area of the car * Knock off hammer included (not original) * Includes side curtains, front & rear windows (matching tan cloth) * Front fender mirror added (left side) * MG TF Workshop Manual * An MG TF "Operation Manual" (Owner's Manual) for information on all of the functions, service intervals, maintenance, etc. (Not shown in photos, but included with the MG) * Later model seat belts (for improved safety) in coordinating tan color * Optional factory wire wheels CONDITION SUMMARY The car is in absolutely beautiful condition and reflects not only the considerable investment in the restoration, but perhaps more important the attention to detail that it has received from its owner during the previous several years. Cosmetically, the car is fresh having been driven only a few hundred miles since its completion. The car shows extremely well with absolutely gorgeous paint, body, interior, and top/side curtains. Even the front of the car (along with the sides/fenders) remains free from any road/rock chips, or damage. The exterior trim is in equally excellent condition and there are absolutely no signs of rust on the body of the car. Most of the chrome and other trim are excellent and there are only a few components that show their original patina / aging. The goal of the restorer was not to build a new car but to bring the MG TF "back to life", by restoring it to a high level but by retaining as many of the original components / parts as possible. So, while it is impossible to show in the photographs, some of the "bright-work" is original, California trim that shows the very minor scratches and loss of brilliance that would be seen in fresh, triple plated, show quality chrome. However, we are confident that even the most critical prospective buyer will be extremely pleased with the quality of this restoration. From both a cosmetic perspective and mechanical perspective, we would not change a thing as we view this MG TF as 100% "turn-key." The TF needs nothing to be enjoyed for the summer season. DRVING THE MG TF Each time we have the pleasure of representing an older MG, we are reminded why these cars why they left their owner's with such fond memories of the cars. Not only were they incredible to look at, but they epitomized what true sports cars were all about in the early/mid 1950's. This particular MG TF's runs and drives very well. It starts immediately, even after sitting for several days/weeks with the use of the choke and runs smoothly when cold, or warm. The engine does not hesitate and it runs smoothly as it is shifted up through the gears. The transmission shifts well and there are no disturbing noises in the forward gears, or rear end. As with most of the early T Series cars, first gear is very low and is used only to get the MG TF rolling. In fact, the MG can be driven using 2nd gear the gear to get the car moving since 1st is so low. Also, it is important to note that unlike some of the previous, early MG's that we have had, this example has an excellent transmission, clutch and drive-line. There is not excessive noise In first gear, or reverse (as is oftentimes the case), the clutch engages well and does not slip. The car shifts well in the forward gears and can downshifted once the driver familiarizes himself/herself with the MG. Finally, the MG does not pop out of the forward gears, or reverse. The MG steers straight, does not pull to the left, or right or exhibit any drivability issues. MG enthusiasts will notice that most (perhaps all) of the instrumentation is MG authentic including the rare, 3-spoke wire wheel that still adorns the car. The clock, located in the lower portion of the tachometer) is not working, but then they didn't work shortly after the cars were produced! The MG runs cool on even the warmest California day with no history of overheating or excessive temperatures. In fact, we recently drove the cars on a long, back road journey in 105 degree+ California temperatures with no signs of overheating! The gauges are fully functional (speedometer, tachometer and oil pressure) as are the lights and even the turn signals (a testament to the proper installation of a new wiring harness). The clock is not working but, as we understand, they stopped shortly after the cars were delivered! The MG TF does not smoke, leak, or have any unusual engine noises. It exhibits NO drivability problems. Even the characteristic oil leakage is extremely minimal and in fact we notice no oil "markings" on our floor from this MG. This can be attributed to the cars recent mechanical update / rebuild. MISCELLANEOUS GENERAL INFORMATION * We have had very good success utilizing UShip.com in locating transporters (especially for relatively short distances), and recommend giving them a try. For long distance enclosed transport we recommend Showtime Motorsports (enclosed transport only) for competitively price national moves. * As with virtually all collector/specialty vehicles, we find that parts and resources are readily available for this (and most every vehicle), thanks in large part to the Internet! * In addition to the purchase price of the vehicle, California buyers will be subject to sales tax, documentation fee, DMV transfer fees and license/registration. Out-of-state buyers will be responsible for the purchase price of the vehicle and any local taxes/fees will be the purchaser's responsibility to pay in their respective state. IMPORTANT NOTE: if the vehicle is delivered or driven in California and driven on California roads, sales-tax, license registration and transfer fees will be assessed per California law. * While we encourage telephone calls to discuss this vehicle in greater detail we will not respond to inquiries asking "What is the reserve". Also, if you would prefer that we call you to answer any questions about the vehicle; shipping alternatives, etc. please e-mail us with your telephone number and will gladly get back in touch with you. * As with any collectible vehicle of this vintage we are unable to provide a warranty or guarantee of condition. However, we make every effort to accurately represent our vehicles, and highlight both positive items as well as areas that require attention. We ask that prospective buyers consider our EBay history/feedback, standing in the community, length of time in business, and other factors when purchasing a collectible vehicle from Classic Cars Ltd. * Please keep in mind that, as with any used vehicle, minor cosmetic issues/flaws may be present that add to the "patina" of the car and are a part of even the best restoration, or even a relatively new, used "pre-owned" vehicle. Also, ownership of a vintage British (or any other type vehicle, for that matter) is more enjoyable if the owner is familiar with the "realities" of these unique cars. Unlike more modern day vehicles, these cars require regular, ongoing care/maintenance and some mechanical knowledge, patience, and understanding can make the experience considerably more pleasant. That said, collector / "specialty" car owners will tell you (emphatically) that they love their cars and wouldn't trade them for anything!! PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet. We believe that it is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, but not limited to: - How long have they been in business? - How much experience do they have with collector cars? - How many positive collector car vehicle sales have completed (positive EBay feedback)? - How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle? - Do the photos show details of the interior, exterior, top, chrome, etc. or are they simply "Glamour Shots" taken from a distance? - Does the seller have a Surety Bond to protect the financial transaction? - What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license? - Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances? - Does the seller enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation? - Can the seller assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales?
