Vehicle Description Here is a rare find. If you are a fan of the W123 chassis Mercedes (300CD, 300D and 280CE) you might be interested. This is a one (1) owner 1985 280CE that was converted to a cabriolet by authorization of Mercedes Benz. When the owner bought the car in Germany, he special ordered it as a convertible at the dealership. Mercedes Benz was not offering convertibles for this model at the time, but, was taking special orders for a conversion model. The conversion was done in Enschede, Holland, near the German border by an accredited company under MB approval. Then MB deliverd the car to the owner. Only 11 of these cars were converted this way. Note that the car is a 1985 model. MB ceased importing the 280CE to the USA in 1981, however, continued to build them for the european market until 1985. You will see in the pictures that this is a true European model: it has a column shifter (shifter not on the console) it has short bumpers, the dash vent controls are different than the USA model and it was made without an air conditioner (not needed in central Germany). The owner lived in Germany for the first 12 years of the car's life then moved to the USA and brought the car with him. The car has been in California USA since 1997. It was fully legalized by both the Feds and the State of California. After owning the car 23 years, the owner has decided to sell it. EXTERIOR: Up until 3 years ago, the car was garaged. Since then, it has been outdoors. It was repainted 10 years ago and that paint is in good to very good condition, but, needs to be buffed. Their is some rust formation on the hood edge and at the jack points. The cloth top is original and is very substantial. It is heavily lined, but has a few tears that allowed a little leakage. It needs to be repaired or replaced if one wants perfection. The top is manually operated...no motor or mechanism to wear-out, or, replace. INTERIOR: The interior is outstanding for 23 year old car. The dashboard is like new with no cracks. It is original and not a cap or cover. The dash wood is perfect with no cracks and the upholstery and carpets are as nice as you will see. There is nothing needed for the interior. MECHANICALS: This car has only 93,975 original miles. The mileage is true and has been verified by "AutoCheck". And, yes, the odometer works. Everything on this car works, but the clock has a mind of it's own...sometime it works and sometime it doesn't. All other electricals and electric windows work flawlessly. 2 weeks ago, new Brakes and Rotors were installed as well as 4 new Tires and Tune-Up...cost $1955.00. Receipt comes with the car. I test drove the car for 100 miles and it drove beautifully, but noticed the steering wheel had a little play in it. And, I just noticed a few drops of oil on the driveway. I'm told this is fairly common for W123 cars. Car is sold "as is, where is". Other than that, this car can be driven to New York tomorrow. This is a classic car that can be enjoyed today as a summertime cruiser. Also, if you are a "joy bidder" and have no intentions of completing an auction, please go somewhere else. Also, looking further into the condition, there is rust inside the right front and right rear wheel well about where the jack points are. Also, the right front floor pan has a 3" rust area and the left rear floor pan has a 2" rust area. Both are rusted through. There is a 1" paint bubble on the left rear 1/4 panel.
