Offered for sale is a clean example of the R129 series Mercedes-Benz Roadster, a 1993 SL 500 in all original condition and with a clean, low mileage Florida pedigree. It was owned by one of our long term service customers who no longer needs it, and would prefer to sell it on eBay for a bargain price than make repairs on the convertible top system. The top can be used manually (up or down in about 2 minutes) using a special tool from Mercedes-Benz that we will include with the auction, but some of the hydraulic cylinders that work it are leaking, and these would have to be repaired if you wanted the power top to work as it came from the factory. The car comes with bit the cloth soft top and the factory hard top, either of which can be affixed (or lowered) manually with minimal effort. Because this car must sell, it is being offered at a very low opener and with no reserve - it will sell to the high bidder at the price the eBay market sets.
The exterior of this low mileage Mercedes is in very good condition from front to back, and the CarFax certified low mileage is evident all around. The paint is original from front to back, with minimal dings or scrapes, and very light road wear. The original soft and hard tops remain in nice original condition, and one can tell that this car was garaged by the original owners for most of its life. The Dayton radials are in great shape, and the lights, lenses, wheels and trim look sharp all around. It's a very clean car outside.
The interior is also very nice, with very nice appointments and most of it in very good condition. The leather seats have moderate wear that is not a major detraction, but very typical for even a lightly used SL of this vintage. The dash and panels are nice and tight with no cracking or issues, and the leather wrapped wheel shows only light wear. All of the accessories are working as they should, with the exception of the radio (this displays only an error code and produces no sound). The air conditioning is ice cold, and the heat works great. The windows and locks operate smoothly, and the power seats adjust to all positions properly. This car was priced within sight of $100,000 in 1993, and the look, feel, and quality of the materials reflects this.
Mechanically, this car is in great shape all around, with the motor producing clean power through the rev band while running smoothly, and the transmission shifting perfectly through the gears. The original owners were very good about maintenance, and the service book has been stamped properly almost to current. The brakes are in great shape, the suspension feels very good, and the car tracks straight and smooth with no problems. It's a blast to drive, top up or top down.
If you are looking for a R129 series SL at a bargain price, this would be an excellent choice. It's solid where it counts, has had only one owner and low miles, never traveled outside of southern Florida, and the top issue will insure it sells cheap. Bud with confidence, this is a nice one!
