The previous owner (both he and his wife passed away in the mid to late 1990s) was interviewed by the Toledo Blade and this article appeared in a March 10, 1990 edition. Here are excerpts from the newspaper article/interview with the late Mr. Davis: "I bought this 1936 Nash three years ago and then two years ago I decided to tear it down and build it up like new so that we could take that car and visit all of our relatives around America and then come back home in time to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. It had been sitting in a quonset hut in Wyoming for 23 years and there wasn't a bit of rust on it anywhere," he said. The article continues, To a retired mechanic, repair was child's play -- two years of child's play. He rebuilt the transmission and rear end; took the body off the frame and painted the frame; pulled the springs, painted them; put in a 12-volt electrical system, etc. One thing he didn't do was replace the upholstery .... his wife did that. "It's all brand new and beautiful. She did a wonderful job," he added proudly. The old like-new car will get its first test in a Veteran Car Club of America frostbite tour after which the Davises will take off on their 6,300 mile visit in the 54-year old car pulling a 15-foot camper. He figures on being back in time to plan their fiftieth anniversary party. Does Davis have any doubts about making the trip? "If I did, we wouldn't go," he replied firmly. End of article interview. We bought this car from the daughter-in-law of the owners described above. She said her in-laws had a grand trip with no perils that she could remember. He is a member of the Nash Car Club and it appears that this car has caused quite a stir among some of its members. The following is a list of emails that he has sent me starting with our first contact. Dear victorianjane, Could you please look around the firewall area for a 2 inch by 3 1/2 inch plate listing some numbers and display the answer . There is a question as to what model year this car is that has a few of us wondering what year it is for sure. Thanks for helping us out . Rev Milhone # 1258 Nash Car Club of America. - 3649nash Dear 3649nash, We didn't find a plate on the firewall but there was one on the door frame - Ser. No. C-6242; motor No. 5764. I hope that helps in your discovery. Jane - dear victorianjane Its not a 1936 nor is it a LaFayette from what we see. Its actually a very rare Nash known as the 1935 400 series. Very few made. Its quite a stumbling point with the club due to the long and convoluted story about the beginnings of the 400. Many places don't even list the 35 400 as being a actual car , but it is . I am dealing with a guy in Australia that has one . One in Washington state and one in France.Alligator hood , those louvers on the hood and the ornament all say 1935 400 . The numbers you gave me also translate over to 1935 400. Lafayette's all had a BIG letter "L" for an ornament and the hood side louvers were swirled in the front. And only the 400 had the trap door for the radiator and oil check like your has . Its a rare one . We have no more than 5 or so that we know of still around. Sorry , to be technical , its a 3548 , in Nash designation.---Rev--- ---Thanks--- Rev Milhone Jane, I have a 1936 400 , so I do know a little about them , although again , the history of the 400 is still quite veiled , but we are getting to the bottom of how it all was . The Nash Car Club of America has quite a page on the story of the 35 - 36 Nashes under " Members cars " page . With the last minute switching of the grilles by the dealerships that was factory sponsored and the whole 400 story , its quite interesting for the 400 fan. Good luck with your auction . Again , its a very rare car. ---Rev Milhone
