Vehicle Description
Another Z car! Where do we find these things? Here’s another gem for you, as beautiful as it is well kept. Now, how do you make one of the most revered cars in the world better? You hack off the roof! 300ZX cars came in three flavors; coupe, turbo coupe, and convertible. While the regular issue coupes are brilliant, it’s the turbo and the drop top that are truly special. Nissan assembled fewer than 4,000 convertibles over a four-year production run, and only 292 in 1995 like this one—if that’s not special I don’t know what is!
The shape is unmistakable, this joint venture between Nissan’s design studios in Tokyo and California. This “basking crocodile” won many awards and from within and outside of the automotive press. Japanese-built hardtops were shipped to the ‘states for modification by ASC, the most respected sunroof and convertible company in the world. Top down, the safety hoop provides for rollover protection and a firm place to mount seat belts while contributing greatly to chassis strength. Besides, there are a number of convertibles like Mustangs and Camaros whose owners add them for style, so no points off for that!
Hop inside. No way—this thing’s a five speed! Seriously—how many automatics do you have to look at before you find a manual car? Let’s check out the rest of the place. Convertibles automatically came with leather (the seats, dash and door panels are all in excellent shape with very minimal wear.) There’s a manual air conditioning system in place of the much bemoaned and finicky automatic setup and an AM/FM cassette radio that supplies the tunes. The power seat glides with precision, the gauges are clear and bright—this is an interior with no faults!
The exterior of the car is just about perfect, and just as you’d expect a 30,004 mile, dentist owned car to look. He put around 24,000 of the total miles on the car since purchase in 2001, meaning he bought a nearly new six year old car! The dark green pearl paint looks fantastic, day or night and is nearly completely devoid of chips or scratches. The manual top’s in great shape and works perfectly. The wheels are very nice and bright with no rash, and are surrounded by excellent 225/50/VR16 Michelin XGT V4 tires.
The engine looks as good as it runs, which only happens when the miles are kept low and the car never sees foul weather. The intake runners are brilliant silver instead of yellow (the clear coat naturally dulls on high mileage cars.) A newer battery sits in the right rear corner for quick starts. Again, one more place with no issues!
Flip the car over to find mint sheet metal and all original components down to the exhaust. No damage, no rust; just the stuff that’s supposed to be there. Pop the trunk to find the same story—nice carpet, the spare and jack are there—just as it should be.
The good doctor dutifully replaced the tires, battery and fluids, but beyond that the car offered him no problems to fix! In the hands of an idiot, you can burn through a 300ZX in weeks, but if cared for as well as this car’s been it’ll last forever!
Opportunities to pick up a very low mileage, very well cared for, rare, five speed convertible are few and far between. If you’re a Z fan you know how special this car is, and if you’re new to the brand you don’t know what you’re missing! This is a brilliant car that makes no missteps and looks fantastic. Pack it away or drive the wheels off of it—either way the car will put a smile on your face!
