Vehicle Description
Up for Bids is a 1987 Oldsmobile 442 HURST/OLDS Street Hot Rod clone. It has close to 400 HP 72 Olds 350 engine/350 Turbo transmission, 8.5 3.73 positraction rear end. It's painted a very bright PPG Pearl Red Tri-Coat Color. The color code is E9, which is the Pearl Red you see on late model Mustangs. It has a new Hurst olds seats covers. The interior that accents the exterior very well.
BODY/SUSPENSION
This project with a very clean/straight/rust free 1987 Cutlass Salon. The Salon has the same suspension package as the 442,it has the larger diameter sway bars front and rear and the same springs. It has the same factory tach and gauge setup as the 442 does also. The main differences between the 442 and Salon were the motors and the 442 appearance package. The car was completely disassembled down to the bare frame and body shell. I did not take the body off the frame because it was so clean. The frame and underside was cleaned/primed and repainted black. The suspension was totally rebuilt/repainted front and rear using Polygraphite bushings to eliminate the squeaking that Polyurethane bushings have. These Polygraphite bushings with the other modification. Like the rear upper/lower control arms have been "boxed" for strength and rear seat X Bracing. Makes this car drive like a rocket ship on rails. It has new tie rods/ball joints/centerlink/idler arm/quick ratio steering box/shocks etc. The brakes were totally redone with new Baer Massive 13" discs brakes in front and 12" discs brakes in rear with adjustable proportional valve /Baer pads/Baer calipers/wheel bearings/master cylinder and brake booster.
The body was then painted and reassembled. I used a NOS front bumper cover because the original one had deformaties and tears. The doors were rebuilt with new power window motors, the door hinges with new pins and bushings. I also installed new outer window sweeps on the doors .I also installed new door and roof rail weatherstripping put NEW front/rear chrome bumpers with very rare/hard to find aluminum bumper inner structures to reduce weight. It has a new windshield and all of the windows were removed and resealed. It has a fiberglass bolt on 2" Cowl Induction hood that accents the car nicely. It has a rear spoiler off of a 83-84 Hurst Olds. New Reproduction Gold 442 stripes and decals on the car and that also accents the color combination very nicely. The chrome pillar moldings are NOS and were very hard to find. The firewall/metal part of the inner fenders/radiator cover/radiator support etc. were all painted the Pearl Red body color, very nicely done. The hood hinges/hood latch and body bolts were all yellow zinc plated and really details the under hood area.
INTERIOR
The seats have been redone in the correct factory material for 1984 HURST/OLDS, head liner/carpet is new. It has a rare 1984 HURST/OLDS steering wheel on a tilt column. The turn signal lever has been replaced with an NOS piece. The factory tach/gauges all work including the "RARE 120 MPH "speedometer that was a 87 442 only piece it has white face with blue lighted background. It has a 4" AutoMeter SuperComp Monster tach mounted under the top part of the dash bezel. It's mounted in a place that's easily seen by the driver but doesn't look out of place. It has AutoMeter Oil/Water temperature gauges mounted under the dash that are also mounted in a place that's easily seen by the driver. The AutoMeter tach/gauges are the brushed aluminum look. It has the Pioneer AM/FM-CD radio that fits into the factory radio trim. And is hooked up to 4 new front/rear AC Delco factory speakers. It has an NOS power antenna that works as it should. It has HURST/OLDS Lighting Rods shifter that fits in the factory console shifter hole and looks like it came from the factory. I even fixed the shifter to lock the steering column just like the factory did. The console has an NOS woodgrain ashtray door/ashtray that's NEVER been used. The dash has NOS woodgrain trim for the radiocenter A/C bezel, the rest of the dash woodgrain is very nice original used pieces.
ENGINE
The engine is a 72 Olds 350 with the 7A heads. These heads have the hardened seats for todays gas. The heads have been mildly ported/polished and opened up to accept the Stainless Ferrea brand valves 2.070 intake/1.700 exhaust valves with a competition valve job. It has a high lift Competition Cams hydraulic cam and springs that makes the engine sound very wicked. Scorpion Roller rockers, Mondello Hydraulic lifters, harden rod guides and Lunati push rods. The pistons are new with a .060 over bore with moly rings. The engine was balanced and blueprinted, the cylinder boring and honing was done on a Sunnen CK10 cylinder sizing machine using torque plates. The rods were rebuilt/resized/shot peened using ARP rod bolts. It has a Comp Cams double roller timing chain set, the cam was degreed in by the cam specs. The distributor is an HEI with all Accel components, cap/rotor/coil/module and the advance curve has been set up for this engine. The engine is topped off with an Edelbrock Performer RPM aluminum intake manifold and a highly modified NOS 1972 750 cfm Rochester Quadrajet carburetor with electric choke. There is a heat dissapater plate between the intake and carb to help keep heat away from the carb. It has a pair of valve covers that have the "Edelbrock" script stamped in them that have been chromed to accent the motor. It has a high flow KN air cleaner on top of the carb. The compression ratio was set @ 9.8 so pump gas is acceptable, no racing fuel needed unless you want it. I installed a n red Flex-a-lite Compact Dual Electric Fan. You can drive this car on the hottest day, even in traffic and the engine temperature doesn't get above 180-190 degrees. It has Hedman headers that have been ceramic coated by Jet Hot, this keeps the under hood temperatures down and keeps them from rusting. The headers flow into 2 1/4" aluminized pipe to the two chambered FlowMaster mufflers and out a set of NOS factory tailpipe with Impala SS stainless steel tips that exit in the stock location behind the tires. This car with this motor and exhaust system sounds very good and would make anybody proud. More new parts include, radiator/Powermaster XS Torque Starter /water pump/Powermaster 140 amp alternator/ fuel pump/Optima Red Top battery/plug wires.
TRANSMISSION
The trans is a Turbo 350 that has been modified. It has a shift kit in it that allows you to either shift it manually or let it shift automatically. If you leave it in drive, it shifts like a normal car, shift it manually if you like. This trans shifts firmly and on time every time. It has a deep sump aluminum finned pan for additional cooling capacity. It has an A-1 torque converter, t his is a company in Ca. that specializes in racing/street type converters. It has enough stall speed to make it peppy but not enough to make it sloppy for street use. The drive shaft has been balanced and has new universal joints.
REAR END
The rear end is a 8.5 3.73 positraction and has been totally rebuilt. It has new bearings/shims/positraction friction plates/wheel cylinders/brake shoes/seals etc. The 8.5 rear end is the one that comes in 84 Hurst/85-87 442's and Buick Grand Nationals. This is a very strong rear end that will take a lot of power. The upper/lower control arms have been "boxed" for strength and have new polygraphite bushings. It also has new rear shocks. The rear end also has a cast aluminum cover that's similar to a W 27 except it has "442" cast into it, this looks great from the rear.
WHEELS/TIRES
Custom built Boyd Coddington Polished Smoothie II 17" x 8" Wheels with rare Center Caps. Kumho Ecsta ASX Tires. The fronts are with 225/50R17 and the rears are 255/50R17 tires. Red tipped lug nuts
SUMMARY
This is a very nice car that runs very well, very fast and drives like a dream. It doesn't rattle and is very smooth and has a ton of eye appeal. This is not a show car but it's a lot better than a lot of so called show cars. This car has been built for approx..3 years, it's been driven, not abused but it will take abuse. This car was built with no expense spared, I didn't short cut anything . I would not be afraid to take this car across the country, it's that good of a car. The milage currently shows 51,717 but it has less than 3,000 miles since the restoration.
I'm currently restoring 1969 HURST/OLDS Clone Hot Rod with 20" wheels with huge brakes. With a 550 HP Oldsmobile 350. I'm out of space, my loss is your gain, bid with confidence.
