This is one of the rare front wheel drive diesel GM intermediate size cars. It has the 262 cubic inch (4.3L) V6 diesel engine. This engine was a much improved version of the original 5.7L V8 Olds diesel. The transmission is the 3 speed (non overdrive) automatic with a locking torque converter. It drives well, rides good and has quite a bit more pep than the 5.7 equipped rear drive diesel cars.
I bought this car 2 years ago needing an injector pump. After replacing the pump with a rebuilt unit, this car runs very nicely. It is averaging slightly better than 30MPG in a mix of urban and city driving. This would also be an inexpensive, running car to experiment with bio-diesel or waste vegtable oil. I have driven it about 1200 miles since purchase. I fixed a few other small things on the car and got everything working except the cruise control.The vacuum operated heater control is stuck too. It is probably best eliminated and is used only on the A/C equipped cars. From what I can tell, the engine and transmission are original. The tires are about 50%.
Overall, the car is decent for a driver or beater. The interior is clean with no tears. The headliner is starting to sag in a few small spots but is still in good shape. The paint is cracking on the roof, hood and trunk and the door bottoms are rusted out. (I have the repair panels for the doors) there is also a spot of bondo over the left headlights. (the light colored area in the pic) The floors and frame are solid with some surface rust. The car is originally from Maryland, but I bought it in New York State so it has been in some salt. It will also need one CV joint boot. I believe they are all original.
I really like this car but have to many cars so some are going to have to go. I just don't have the time anymore to keep up with all of them.
