Vehicle Description
Few Plymouths are as easily identifiable as a ’71 ‘Cuda. From the mean grille and road lamps to the fender gills to the massive billboard stripes the cars scream out for attention. Now, take a plain Jane 318 car, paint it one of the coolest colors ever (Sassy Grass Green,) drop on the over-the-top Shaker hood and stuff a Hemi in it. Well now, that would be a pretty good combination, wouldn’t it?
Start outside. Of course, nothing’s going to grab your attention like that big hole in the hood. Sure, Ford put shakers on the Mustang, but only Chrysler would cut one big enough to double as an escape hatch for the engine! The hood’s steel, too and not one of those flimsy fiberglass jobs. The grille up front has been masterfully restored, the front bumper’s covered in new chrome and the road lights are excellent reproductions, as are the front marker lights in the lower valance. Sliding down the sides you’ll find the trademark fender gills in (again) steel fenders. Four new wheel lip moldings, new rocker moldings, new door handles and a new antenna play well with the buffed and polished window trim surrounding the new black vinyl top. The billboard stripe package is the other “can’t miss” item for ’71 and they’ve been expertly applied in black. It’s hard to argue with the HEMI letters called out on the doors at the front edges of the stripe! There’s a Go Wing on the deck lid leading down to the excellent taillights, rechromed bumper, refinished tail panel and dual exhausts sticking out of the ‘Cuda lower valance. New rallye wheels with B F Goodrich Radial T/A’s 245/60 and 255/60/15 tires finish off what would have been a dream order sheet!
Inside you’ll spend your time sitting on restored salt and pepper buckets—they’re the most visible part of the new upholstery. There’s a new carpet and a new headliner, too. The door panels are in excellent condition with excellent armrest pads, a new mirror nut, clean window cranks and new ‘Cuda emblems. A new tuff wheel (the soft one and not the hard Grant knockoff) feels great in your left hand while the console mounted pistol grip four speed shifter occupies your right. The rallye dash provides all the information you need about what’s going on up front, and the pad itself is new and beautiful. Everything else from the pedal pads to the reverse light in the dash is either new or restored!
Underneath you’ll find a true winter ’70 date coded 3.54 geared Dana 60 rear axle getting power from a true 18 spline Hemi four speed gearbox—how frequently do you find that kind of hardware on a recreation? The underside’s finished in flat black and a quick inspection reveals clean sheet metal. The dual exhaust is new from reproduction exhaust manifolds to exhaust tips. The hardlines have all been replaced. The front suspension’s tight. Rest assured this car will take you where you need to go!
Open the hood—it’s metal, of course. There are new hood pins and lanyards, too. That’s not what you’re looking at though, is it? It’s the Hemi. It’s ALWAYS the Hemi. The 2007 vintage crate motor has a couple hundred miles on it and runs accordingly. The massive Ben Snobar reproduction Shaker assembly hides an 850CFM Holley double pumper carb mounted on the motor’s dual plane intake. Mercifully, the orange electronic ignition box is hidden down below the horns on the passenger inner fender and not prominently displayed! The aluminum water pump, standard on crate engines, helps shave weight and heat. Power steering makes life easy as does the switch to disc brakes. There’s a new reproduction group 27 red top battery, new cables, a new radiator, now hoses, new belts, new…everything! Mechanically this is a brand new car!
Real ’71 Hemi ‘Cudas are otherworldly expensive, and most aren’t very well sorted as they never go anywhere. This one’s a ton more affordable, has 100% of the looks and presence, and is virtually new! The Mopar show season is just warming up—what are you planning on driving?
