Reliable Minivan with Many Newer Parts
Car starts reliably and runs and drives smoothly. It is an AWD (All Wheel Drive)
so all four wheels have traction which gives it added handling in bad weather.
It has a nice comfortable interior layout of 4 Captains chairs and a rear bench instead
of two front Captains chairs and two rear benches.
The reason I am selling it is because it will not pass state inspection
without work on the Bendix 10 hydraulic brake booster (dealer price new is $2295).
According to the Plymouth website this item is a lifetime warrantee recall part.
Yet every time I visited a local Plymouth dealer I got the run-around and they
refused to honor the recall. I have also been told that the best repair option is to
bypass the Bendix 10 completely and install a regular brake booster (if you know
how to repair brakes). Since I am neither a lawyer nor a mechanic I did not pursue this further.
Other then the brakes the car is fine and would have passed inspection.
The car is completely drivable but with the brake booster not-working properly
the brakes work fine at slow speeds but dont come on as they normally would when
braking suddenly at high speeds.
The car has had a number of new parts in the past 3 years ( I bought it on eBay in 2005):
1) AMOCO rebuilt A604 transmission (30,000 miles ago) with new transmission cooler.
2) new Bosch battery (10,000 miles ago)
3) new starter (15,000 miles ago)
4) new rear shocks (1,000 miles ago)
5) new rack and pinion (30,000 miles ago)
6) new radiator (25,000 miles ago)
7) new rear window (5,000 miles ago)
8) new jensen stereo (15,000 miles ago)
Because it has a good working 3.3L engine (cost for a used one is about $900) and an AMOCO rebuilt and still running A604 transmission (a rebuilt transmission costs around $1,850) this car is also potentially a good parts car for someone who owns a similar vehicle.
Would make a nice truck for a farm or plant that could use a vehicle for local hauling
(with the back seats removed) but wants to save on gas over a pickup truck.
Aside from the major brake booster issue the car has numerous small problems which I
have not repaired because they dont bother me but since another person might feel differently
I want to describe them in detail:
1) carpet is presentable but has some stains
2) hood ornament fell off (i have it)
3) hood cable handle is broken, and I use a pliers instead.
4) cd player skips when driving thru bumps (needs to be secured)
5) interior lining is coming apart near sliding door (see photo)
6) driver window does not work in the summer (works in the winter)
7) sliding door sensor does not work and the car thinks the door is open
( i removed the "bong" sounder because of this)
8) rear washer works but does not spray evenly
9) front washer works on driver side but passenger does not spray evenly
10)the sliding door got swiped when the car was parked and shows some
rust and damage (see photos)
Otherwise pretty much everything else works including:
1) overhead console with digital compass and temperature
2) rear door unlock remote
3) rear defroster
4) power windows (other then driver side front window) including power rear side vent windows
5) constant all wheel drive
