Offered here is one of a few 911 targas produced in the latter half of 1973 with the Bosch K-Jetronic (CIS) fuel injection. Porsche used this system on all 911s until the 1984 model year. While carburetors and mechanical fuel injection have their own attributes, CIS really can't be beat for all around drivability, fuel economy and reliability. This particular car was also optioned with full "S" suspension. The car has 6' Fuch alloy wheels, front and rear stabilizer bars, Koni strut assemblies, alloy front brake calipers and the steel front air dam.
As far as I can tell the car began its life in California, and stayed there until '99 when it migrated to Utah. In 1995 the car underwent an extensive cosmetic refurbishment. At this time the color was changed from metallic silver to light ivory. The car had every bit of trim and rubber removed and replaced during this process. The work has held up nicely, and overall the car is in very nice "driver" condition.
BODY: California rust free. I can find no evidence of prior rust, or collision repair. The paint is Ditzler Imron and still has a nice gloss. There are some small door dings on the passenger door, and a few areas where chips have been touched up. Since the car was properly dismantled for the repaint, there is absolutely no overspray. The car has seen very little use (about 10,000 miles) since refurbishment, and has always been stored indoors. All of the targa top related rubber is new, and the top itself was completely restored. The lenses are European style, and genuine Porsche parts. All of the body deco is new. The glass is excellent with all new trim. The chrome on the wind wings and the stainless targa bar are some of the best original I've seen. It's really obvious that they started with a nice car.
INTERIOR: I suspect the California sun did its work on the original interior, as it has been completely re-done. There are no cracks in the dash. The instruments and switches are nearly perfect.
MECHANICAL'S: The records I have for the car stretch back only to 1995. I do not have any record of major mechanical work having ever been performed on the engine. What I can say, is that it runs really well. The car idles smooth at 900 RPM and pulls smooth throughout the whole range. It smokes some on start up, but most do. The car had and engine out re-seal and valve adjustment in '00 and less than 1000 miles ago. It does have some oil leaks now. The passenger side cam seal appears to be leaking (the left side was done in '00) and there is another leak at the rear of the engine on the left side. The heat exchangers and muffler are in good shape.
The transmission was replaced with a rebuilt unit in '00 and less than 1000 miles ago. The clutch was also replaced at this time. As you might expect, it shifts perfect and the clutch works well.
The rubber brake hoses and fluid were changed recently. The brakes stop straight, and have a nice hard pedal. The pedal box was rebuilt in '96. The tires are old, and should really be replaced. I believe the wheels to be original to the car as all the date codes match. One of the wheels must have been damaged at some point, as the spare is steel. I did not get a jack or tool kit with the car.
All of the exterior lights work, signals cancel, etc. All of the instruments are functional. The radio is the only thing not working. The engine sounds so good; a radio seems sort of pointless anyway.
Overall this is a delightful car. I can't say I've ever been a big targa fan, but this car has changed my mind. The CIS really makes for a nice around town cruiser. While the purist in me would love to return the car to its original color, it is just too nice at this point to tear apart. This is a somewhat rare car, with great options, that can be used for many years exactly the way it is. Rust free cars are getting harder and harder to find.
RESERVE: I've set what I believe to be a realistic reserve for a car of this quality. I generally do not end auctions early.
SHIPPING: The buyer is responsible for arranging and paying for shipping. Transportation costs to Europe from here are about $1500 from my experience.
PAYMENT: I require a $500 deposit via paypal upon winning the auction. Only the deposit can be paid with paypal. The balance is due within five days. Wire transfer, cashiers check, or coin of the realm are acceptable.
ABOUT ME: My day job is that of a truck and equipment dealer. I hold a dealer license under the name of General Fleet Services. I can be reached by phone at 503-705-1620 (Tom)
