The 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe
Porsche management and even Ferry Porsche himself probably could not have imagined that forty three years later, the 911 would still be in production. Still produced and revered still, the 911 is synonymous with an uncompromising and unapologetic sports car mission. In this new century, about the new 911, Porsche Cars North America opines, The Absolute Definition of the Term Sports Car. This certainly is a rare instance when a company peddling their wares makes an over-the-top statement that actually understates their product. Calling a Porsche 911 Carrera a sports car is akin to saying water is wet. There simply are not words adequate to convey the intense rush and tactile feel one experiences behind the wheel of one of these extraordinary machines. The steady evolution since the 901's introduction in 1963 is well documented and merits the time invested to read about this legendary marque. Suffice to say that by 1987, the 911 was an established and well sorted out car. This was the important year Porsche began using the much stronger and more reliable G50 5-speed transmission. The 3.2 liter engine had arrived three years earlier and now made 214 horse power. This horizontally opposed 6 cylinder pushes the sub-2800 pound Carrera with some vigorous haste. The power delivery is smooth and linear, and as the revs climb the haste becomes decidedly frenetic. The 1987 Carrera gathers speed deceptively quick and a glance, finally, at the speedometer is often an alarming reminder that you have once again, accelerated to a license losing velocity. The secondary role of a speedometer in the Porsche cockpit is correctly reflected by its placement to the right of the vastly more important tachometer, which resides large and round directly in front of the driver. The handling of a 911 is awe inspiring with cornering speeds that often defy the laws of physics. A word of caution, however:: driving a Porsche 911 at or near the limit is not for the faint of heart. The 911 bites so hard at initial turn-in with a sudden sureness that quickly raises the confidence level a novice may feel. A front engine car may break the rear loose gradually, giving the driver a chance to recover. The rear engine Carrera can go from securely planted in a curve to rocketing backwards across the median in a split second. Lift throttle over-steer is something 90% of us will never discover traveling from point A to point B. A Porsche driver, it could be argued, does occupy the remaining 10% and for them, the rewards of mastering the high levels of performance in a 911 places them in league with racing history's most celebrated names. A simple errand accomplished in a Porsche Carrera is invested with the kind of magic only a handful of cars in the world can create. The driving position, pedal placement, steering wheel angle, all inside the car, conspire to make the task at hand, that of spirited driving, a thrilling pleasure. It has been happening for over four decades; people getting into their low and sexy 911 Carreras each day to satisfy the soul and heal the burdened spirit. Porsche has never apologized for building its single purpose automobiles. Other car makers offer vehicles that fill the needs from without - isn't it time to consider something from within, something you have long suspected was there, buried under all the commitments and deadlines? You can have a Porsche and no, you do not have to wipe out your 401(k) to get it. Most Porsche buyers take exquisite care of their cars so, read on and find out why now is probably the time and this is definitely the car.
This 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe...
This 911 has been the car for only two other lucky individuals. The concern and attention indulged by these previous owners can be seen from any angle in any light. Like all 911 coupes, the shape is arresting. As you approach, your opinion begins to form; can a car lead a charmed life of garaged protection and gentle, loving treatment? Take a closer look to see what happens when a car is treated this well. This Porsche Carrera is an exquisitely preserved coupe with a power sun roof. The glorious Guards Red finish is in spectacular condition with very minor patina concurrent with a car that is perhaps, half the age of this twenty year old legend. The optional Fuchs forged alloy wheels seem never to age either and look just as stunning as the rest of this shapely 2+2. Power windows, central locking, air conditioning, cruise control, alarm; everything you expect in a car like this is here and all of it working as it should. Some things you might not expect, like a rear window wiper or sport shocks are here too and will certainly be appreciated. And just how gentle was this 911 treated, you finally ask. Certified Porsche service, documented since new, is evident everywhere you look. We have had our Porsche Service Center fully inspect this car with a top to bottom and everything in between 130 pt. inspection to insure the outstanding condition we are claiming. The wheel bearings were the only items needing maintenance along with general servicing; which we approved for completion. The Champagne leather interior is absolutely gorgeous with a flawless dash, beautiful carpet and overall condition representative of indoor storage most of its life. Underneath, the same adult driven story continues - there is simply no indication of leaks or signs of corrosion anywhere on this carefully manicured undercarriage. Open the rear bonnet to find the cleanest, driest engine compartment you will ever see in a twenty year old sports car. The trouble free longevity of Porsche's 3.2 liter 6 is a well known fact among 911 enthusiasts. The dry sump lubrication system contributes to this bullet-proof engine with a 13.7 quart oil capacity. Three and a half gallons of oil means cooler oil and better lubrication. The clutch is smooth and predictable, the G50 transaxle shifts like butter and this muscular Porsche Carrera accelerates with attention getting authority. Inside and out, stopping or going, or just sitting in your driveway improving your homes' market value with its timeless beauty, this Porsche 911 Carrera will be the car for you as well.
I have posted lots of pictures and details about this 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe so you know exactly what you are bidding on. Please feel free to call Doug @ 702-353-7500 or email me with any questions or comments. I reserve the right to close the auction early if sold locally.
What makes a vintage 911 right? . . . Fuchs alloy wheels, Fulda Carat UHP tires on a Guards Red Carrera Coupe. More important is how easy and comfortable it is to actually enjoy a car like this. Items like a working air conditioner can be the difference between looking at your classic ride in the garage or simply driving any time you want, no matter how hot it is.
Is the 911 Coupe esteemed higher than a Targa? Very often it is, and for good reason - the pure uninterrupted shape stays true to the original and preserves the delicious blend of a roof-line thin and delicate that curves into muscular rear fenders, wide and serious.
Nothing but a 911 can look like this . . . and not all 911's look like this. Careful, (documented) maintenance and mature ownership is critical for a high performance sports car to survive. The result is a sensational Porsche that is as tight and strong as the day it was built.
Ultra High Performance tires should be found on a true performance vehicle. Good thing you don't need to buy any for a long time.
A Porsche leaves Stuttgart right. For it to stay right requires attention to service and a committed owner. Extensive documentation confirms that strict adherence to scheduled maintenance has preserved the original appearance and performance of this very special car.
Proof that a car twenty one years old does not have to look even ten years old.
Nobody shapes a seat quite as sexy as Porsche. Notice also the power height controls for the seat bottom . . . and isn't this the color leather is supposed to be?
3.2 Liter SOHC Boxer 6 has a dry sump lubrication system that holds 13.7 quarts - three and a half gallons - in a remote tank that provides cooler oil temperatures and consistent viscosity for long engine life. Also note easy access to oil filter at far right below the yellow oil filler cap.
Everything in here works, including the air conditioner. Is the dash cracked? Is the headliner stained or does it sag? Is the carpet worn? Do the door panels scream I'M A USED CAR? No, no, no and . . . NO.
The Shield that says it ALL!
This Porsche has a documented history of faithful service and upkeep.
