I bought this Porsche knowing I might sell it fairly quickly, that makes me a "flipper". I have a 67 911. You know, the car that yaws and pitches on the highway with the big engine in the back and weights in the front. When you want to have fun on winding roads you are afraid it is going to spin. You end up leaving it in the garage because the chain tensioners are going to fail if you take it out anyway. So it sits in the garage and you count the oil drops and wait for the $4000.00 re-seal job. I made the choice and am offering this 912. I should have my head examined because I put eight hundred fun and trouble free miles on it in the last week and had a blast. I picked it up in Maine and spent some time touring around and then drove it a highway speeds (plus!!) down to Connecticut.
This 912 was sold new in California and stayed there until 5/93 when it was sold to the East coast. It has traveled about 13,000 miles since.
Body and underside: The Bahama yellow is the original color, looks like one repaint. There is primer on the left front fender. There are surface rust spots and blisters. It will need paint. There are about five pencil eraser sized bubbles on the left rear quarter (spot welds?). This is evidence of some kind of repair. The left front fender and door are replacements. There is no undercoat on them so they were new factory replacements. I spent a long time looking for bent and/or straightened metal. The hinge and lock posts, inner fender areas, front end, under and behind rugs, etc. appear to be factory straight. Again, the only evidence is the lack of undercoat and punch outs for power windows that became an option a little later. There are three bolt holes from an air horn compressor on the passenger side inner fender. There is evidence of dampness on the driver side rear seat. I pulled it up and found surface rust. There is an ugly picture but look for the scratch marks made with a screwdriver showing shiney metal. I took a picture of the underside as well. It is solid but it needs to be cleaned and painted as well as the source of dampness found. Now we get to the only rust perforation on the car. The previous owner put a piece of sheet metal under the gas tank support. He told me that there were tiny holes. I looked and found a couple of slits about 1mm wide and 4 or 5mm long. Look for the picture of the pan under the trunk. The slits mentioned run about half the length of the pen placed next to them. The battery was removed for this photo as well. I haven't removed the sheet metal but what I found is what the previous owner described. Beside what I just described, there is no rust found beyond surface spots. There is no repaired rust. This is important as you know. The lenses are in excellent condition with no cracks, crazing, etc. The passenger blinker lense seems a little newer. The fogs are Hella glass repros, I suspect.Very nice! The hood badge is a clean "orange" original.
Interior: Good rugs and rubber mats. The only concern with the mats is where the little pebble finished flap folds over from the passenger side foot rest. This seam is partially open, you have to look for it. This car must have had mats over these. Good shift/handbrake boots. The dash vinyl is not ripped but has become unstuck in places. I have seen this refastened and can be done by an amateur. I took the radio face plate off to inspect the cut out and found that it has been enlarged slightly. The holes for the shafts are original. I do not know if it will show under a period radio, certainly not a problem with a faceplate. The aluminum strip on the dash is deformed. The fog light switch and indicator light are in the punch outs but not correct. The headliner is stained and damaged. The seats are good, no rips and supple and fairly straight. The rear seats are fair. The door panels have speakers. The driver side is off. The armrest is worn.
Mechanics: The engine is not original......HOWEVER!, it is a 1720cc from Harry Pellow, at HCP Research, a "Maestro" motor. Records show that a certain owner owned this car until 1985 when he sold it and then bought it back in 1992. The receipt has this owner's name but no date. This means this motor dates from pre 1985 or post 1992. I find it hard to believe that this motor dates from before 1985. It runs perfectly and sounds like a sewing machine. It does drip a little oil. I do not notice any smoke and it has used/dripped less than a quart after 800 miles. It looks great with powder coating, cad plating, etc. The trans is a four speed. The linkage is a little sloppy. Shifting fast between 2nd and 3rd makes a little crunch. It will not do this if you follow the real "H" pattern and I cannot get it to do it with any kind of downshifting from 4th. Perhaps a freshened up linkage will iron this out. The calipers were replaced with rebuilts last year. The car stops well without any issues. The Porsche tracks straight and well. Bumpy roads show weakness in bushings, etc. as well as a weak trans. mount or shock as there is something loose towards the rear of the car. The Fuchs wheels are nice 14 inchers. There are 5 chromed steel wheels that are dated later and need rechroming. There are no tools but there is the original jack.
Summary: I probably beat this car up more than not with this description. This is a very solid car. The color is good. I have a lot of records including the original maroon owner's packet with the service book with some Vasek Polak stamps as well as other receipts. I took many pictures. I don't know how many I can include here but tell me what picture you want and you will get it. If you are picking this car up in person, you don't have to give me a dime until you see it and are happy. Then you can drive it home WHEREVER that is!Please call me @ 203 675 1343 with any questions. Thank you!
P.S. I was only allowed 24 pictures. I have more, just ask. One picture I discussed was the surface rust under the rear seat. I did include the picture of the underside of the seat, but not the picture from the interior, look for it! Pictures I have include door bottoms, access panel under the gas pedal, headliner, etc.
P.P.S. The oil temp gauge does not work. There is a VDO gauge under the dash.
P.P.P.S. More on the surface rust under the driver's side rear seat. All of the interior underlayment is the original tar/horsehair in original unpicked condition. The one exception is the area under the back seat. It showed signs of degradation. I removed most of it to examine the sheet metal. There was surface rust. I scraped all areas with a screwdriver to expose shiney metal. I had to pick and choose my 24 pictures to be as descriptive as possible. I included the under car shot of this area. It is the one with the heat control cable running across it. This is directly under the surface rust, the seat bottom. Again, please ask for any photo. Any body seam, sill or jamb. I'll pull a wheel, tail light or headlight, no problem!
