Vehicle Description
You are looking at an insured (Infinity Insurance Company) PA State inspected (till 5/09), licensed and fully Pennsylvania street legal 1969 Apache Dune Buggy. It began life as a 1965 Volkswagen which was shortened and the fiberglass body installed. Over the years it fell into disrepair. I bought it in 2001 in pieces. I have since rebuilt or replaced virtually everything.
This buggy is rare for several reasons. First is the full frame windshield. I know of no other buggy including Myers Manx that uses something other than an aluminum frame windshield. This in itself lends character to the vehicle. Second: this buggy has a console of sorts. Currently a radio is mounted there. It does not work and I have never replaced it. Third: most other buggies have the rear deck cut out to accommodate the engine. This buggy has a full deck with the engine fitting completely under this deck.
The original 1500cc single port engine has been replaced with a 1776cc dual port engine. All machine work was done at Jim’s Custom VW in Columbiana Ohio (http://www.jimscustomvw.com/index.html). The dual port heads have been ported, matched, and CC’d. The engine has been balanced. It sports a Crower cam with new lifters and roller tip rocker arms. The oil pump has been upgraded to a high volume pump with an external spin on oil filter. A Bosch blue coil and a Bosch 009 distributor provide the fire. The dual Weber 34-ICT carburetors are fed by an electric fuel pump. The static compression is a mild 8.48:1. This was accomplished by using .080” cylinder spacers and will run on 87 octane gas. (Smaller cylinder spacers will increase compression and power.) I suggest you search for “Turnkey VW 1776 engine” to get a value of the engine alone.
The buggy sits on a swing axel suspension with air shocks supplementing the spring bars. The front beam has king pins and drum brakes. The 14 inch slotted aluminum wheels are mounted using DOT approved Chevrolet adapters.
Overall the buggy is in great shape. I would like to use the word mint, but I can’t. There are several blemishes on the body as evidenced by the pictures. Other known problems include an inoperable gas gauge, several small tears in the driver seat cover and the aforementioned radio.
I have a General Motors tilt steering column that I will include in the sale. There are no issues with the original steering column. I thought the tilt feature would be nice, but I never installed it. I also have a custom tow bar for additional cost of $50 if interested.
