Has $4 Gas got you down? The SAAB 900 gets great gas mileage. But with seating for 4 or 5, plenty of headroom, huge trunk with great access, and comfy seats, it's not your typical tiny, tinny econobox!
What do I mean by "great gas mileage"? I believe the EPA Highway figure for this vehicle was 29 mpg. Last week I drove this one 300 miles and averaged 36 mpg! (about 85% was highway miles, going mostly 60 to 65 mph).
This car is in great shape, inside and out. I bought it 2 years ago for my teenage daughter. We put 14,000 miles on it. She's now off to college, so we don't need a 3rd vehicle sitting in the driveway. That's the only reason I'm selling.
CARFAX indicates no accidents (there is no sign of any and we certainly didn't have any in the past 2 years). Not only is the body straight and clean, it has absolutely no rust...rare for a car of this vintage in MA. How? CARFAX shows that it has spent most of its life in more southern states (TX, VA and GA). Great body condition was one of the main reasons I bought it in 2006. Naturally a car of this age will show dings, scuffs and a few chips...it's not perfect, but better than you'd expect. I show a picture of the most noticeable mark ( a scuff on the top of the rear bumper). But again, no dents, no rust. Maroon in color.
Drivetrain is also better than you'd expect. We've never had any troubles starting the car in any weather...not even in frigid New England winters. Starts right up every time. Engine is a bit noisy at cold idle, but is quiet, powerful and smooth when underway. Auto transmission shifts smoothly. There are no leaks of oil or fluids and the engine definitely does not burn oil. Does not need topping up between oil changes.
In the last 2 years, I've replaced the front struts and adjacent front suspension items, so it is very solid up-front. Both Front tires have less than 6000 miles on them, Rear tires only slightly more....loads of tread left on all of them. I've replaced the Serpentine Belt and had a total rear brake job done only 3000 miles ago. Front brakes were done by previous owner just before I bought it.
Inside, is also better than you'd expect. No rips or tears in the upholstery, though normal surface wear is evident on the front bucket seats. Sunroof operates flawlessly. Sound system works great, including electric antenna. There was and is no CD player in this model. Trunk is clean and cavernous....one of the best things about these SAAB's. Room to expand it even further by rotating the rear seats forward and leaving the hatch open (I once brought home a new Dishwasher in it!!). Heater and A/C work fine and all fan settings work.
To give you buyers even more confidence, I took it for a MA State Inspection Sticker yesterday. Of course it passed with flying colors, both Safety and Emissions. I can fax the official report to interested buyers. I will include a photo of the windshield with sticker showing valid thru August 2009.
Like any car, there are some exceptions that I want to point out:
1. Oil pressure light flickers on at idle, but is off when rpms increase above 1000 rpm. I assume that this indicates normal wear of the oil pump seals. It was like this when we bought. My mechanic has never been concerned about it.
2. Heated front seats do not work. (they were not working when I bought it).
3. Front Passenger Sun Visor is missing. (thanks to the inquisitive kid down the street who twisted it!)
4. Steering Wheel has some (maybe 1/8" to 1/4") Axial "play". (like this when I bought it. My mechanic checked it out and says it is not a safety issue at all. It is not getting any better nor any worse). Causes a bit of a clunking noise when you go over very rough roads.
5. Rear Passenger Door has bad wiring harness...this prevents power window and power lock working on that particular door. The electrics on all the other doors work fine. (because we rarely had anyone in the back seat, I never bothered to have it fixed).
6. Because we've never had any starting issues, I have not replaced the battery. It looks old, you'll probably need to replace it within a year or so ($50 to $100).
7. Not sure if Cruise Control works or not. (if anyone wants me to check it out, I will).
That's about it. You will get 3 keys, remote fob and manual (as shown in one of the photos). I'm located near Worcester, MA.
