Vehicle Description Presented here for auction on eBay Motors is a very nicely restored and unmolested 1966 Volkswagen Beetle. Its quite unique because this "Bug" was purchased new in the small Central Coast community of Salinas, California, near Monterey, and has remained there for nearly four decades. It has had only two previous owners, the second having owned the VW five years. The VW has always been maintained by both owners. It has been properly looked after, garaged, and serviced. Used primarily as a fun driver for getting around the little community, this Bug possesses various attributes that are prized by many a car collector. Such qualities include: ** Desirable model and year ** Only two gentlemen owners since new ** Garage kept ** Factory "see-sand" color ** Original 6-volt electrics ** Low mileage - under 100K ** No Rust - original California car Over the decades, many classic VWs have been scrapped in junkyards, or have been heavily modified to low-rider, kid tastes. Not this one though. It was adult owned it’s entire life and still rides proudly in the fundamental Volkswagen tradition - basic and simple, as intended. The unmistakable European styling of the Volkswagen Beetle has aged gracefully. The lines are simple, timeless, and familiar. This VW is from a time when car manufacturers maintained their own identity and innovations, not "copying" each other with the same overused design cues as shown in today’s vehicles. Sure, the new "Bug" is back, but is it really? Wouldn’t it be more unique to own an authentic, German-produced example where the engine is actually in the rear of the car? 1966 was a monumental year for VW and one of the last for "classic" status. Its a true collectible that can be enjoyed daily, while always remaining in demand. Not a bad set up, eh? Tooling around leisurely in the country or darting through a busy cosmopolitan suburb in a vintage VW Bug truly enhances the driving experience. Its pure fun and excitement for both driver and passengers. Cooool, man. This Bug is a straight-forward example that shows lots of character and is always a crowd-pleaser. It was never a project "brought back to life" from some relic sitting in a field for years. No, this car has always been pampered, maintained, and loved! The "See Sand" finish is the Beetle’s factory color, and was repainted a few years ago to a high standard. As you can see by the photos, the paint is thick and shiny, and the body is straight. Finish has a deep luster, showing a reflection and the VW’s curves quite nicely. Its very sharp looking, indeed. When investigating the underside of any 40 year old car, you never know what to expect. Most of the time there’s rust, corrosion, or other blemishes. Because this car has been garaged, everything is in stellar condition, even the vulnerable battery area, which has been professionally repaired. All glass, brightwork, and window moldings are in excellent condition. The metal painted dash and chrome gauges definitely look the part on this vintage ‘60s Bug. Speaking of paint...the fabulous finish of the dash is factory VW issue and has never been tampered with. Electrical components: lights, signals, odometer, speedometer, horn, wipers, heater, etc. are all in proper working condition. Old radio, however, is a non-op. There are no navigation systems, power windows, computers, A/C, or other "modern conveniences" we’re used to in our everyday vehicles. Its simplicity at it's best! Click on the Above Image for Larger Picture Carpeting is new and matches the factory look. Rubber floormats are very nice and appear to be original. Headliner and sun visors are in excellent shape. Door panels and dash feature original knobs and buttons. Doors cannot be locked from the outside and will need the mechanisms to be fixed to function properly. VW basket weave seats are the correct fabric and color, and have been expertly restored to factory specs - with correct horsehair inner padding, and the seat frames themselves being powder coated! They are supportive and look great - both front and rear. Because it was not a government regulation at the time, this Bug is not equipped with seatbelts, but they can be easily obtained and installed, if you desire. None of them beat the sheer simplicity, reliability and near zero cost of upkeep as the tried and true VW engine. This Bug has been gone through mechanically and is all set to go. With proper care and maintenance, this classic "Vee Dub" should last a long time for future enjoyment. Click on the Images Above for Larger Picture Mechanically, this VW Bug is in great condition. The stock 1300 engine was replaced several years ago with a German-built 1600 unit, and the car’s never been happier. The engine fires up instantly, idles smoothly, and chirps along at freeway speeds problem-free. This Bug is very reliable. In fact, I drove this car home from Salinas to San Luis Obispo, a trip of over 120 miles, and the little Beetle performed flawlessly. Everything’s in order and the way it should be. Here is a list of things done mechanically in the past several thousand miles: ** New transmission ** New muffler ** Brakes serviced: new lines, wheel cylinders, shoes ** Replaced front wheel bearings ** New carburetor ** New chrome rims & tires The best part: awesome mpg! A sigh of relief now that gas has finally toppled the 4 dollar a gallon mark. Here’s a cute car that sips gas and is something you can actually take out and enjoy without being terrified to check the fuel gauge after a long outing. It is after all a Volkswagen, where the terms economical and practical go hand in hand. Click on the Images Above for Larger Picture Upon opening the front trunk, you’ll notice all necessary components are intact and in great condition: original cardboard liner, factory decals, windshield washer reservoir, even the tire jack. Down in the nooks and crannies of the trunk, everything is in good standing. There is no rotting through in the bottom sills and the vulnerable front nose section appears to have a clean bill of health. Even the lid opens clear of the front bumper without scraping. Click on Images for Larger Picture Original trunk liner is in great condition VW paint code label "Seesand L568" still intact Volkswagen steel ID plate The distinct roar of the exhaust...the familiar look of a European milestone design...the solid craftsmanship of a true German engineered motorcar...all these tickle the senses and add to the pride of VW ownership. The prices for collectible European vehicles are shooting up at an alarming rate with no end in sight, especially anything from the glory days of the 1960s, like this classic 1966 Bug. It still retains that "groovy" feeling that everybody loves. History and increasing prices have proven that early production Bugs are highly sought after because of their famed pedigree, solid reputation, and adorable charm. Because of the extensive work performed, both cosmetically and mechanically, the example offered here presents a good value and opportunity in the world of collectible automobiles. This VW would make a great weekend (or daily) driver for someone who’s always wanted to own a vintage Bug, or had sold their’s years ago and regretted it ever since. Now’s the opportunity to make that purchase of a collectible "fun vehicle" that you might have been putting off year after year. Don't settle for less and purchase a fixer-upper you think can be restored on weekends. It won't work. It'll just end up being a project that sits in the driveway for years! Not this one though. Its a turnkey car you can start enjoying right away. For a modest reserve price, someone will be the proud new owner of this nicely restored 1966 Volkswagen Beetle.
