For auction is a 1971 Volkswagen Deluxe Station Wagon Bus. 375k miles total. 50k on new engine. NO RESERVE. This bus WILL sell to the highest bidder. Please read the entire description and ask questions! I bought this bus in March of 2008 and am now selling it because I am moving out of the country and it's too expensive to take cars with you. Haha! As you can see from the pictures it is in relatively great shape. It was painted gray some time ago and was originally VW's Chianti Red which you can still see in the engine compartment, under the gas cap, and a few other places. There are a couple minor spots where the gray paint is chipping but they are in barely noticeable spots. Like above the rear license plate under the reverse light. Compared to others I have seen this bus is practically rust free. At the bottom of the left rear corner there is some rust that is not that bad and is the worst spot on the bus. At the front left corner it has a very small dent that has chipped the paint but has not started to rust. Under both the front mats and passenger area mats are rust free unlike what I have seen on other Type 2s that are in desperate need of some TLC. The interior as you can see is pretty good. It didn't come with the middle bench seat so I don't have it. The three existing seats have covers on them but under them the material is free of holes or otherwise. They just aren't the prettiest color anymore so I can't blame the last owner for covering them. In the passenger area the side panel on the left side has some of the laminate material peeling back. The air vents running across the doors are cracked a little bit so I can't imagine they are very effective. Not that they ever really were anyway! Haha. This bus does have an aftermarket tape deck in it but it is not hooked up yet. A couple other small quirks that give this bus character are things like the driver door only opens from the outside, the passenger door window isn't connected to the roll mechanism, the passenger door doesn't have the key lock on the outside, the sliding door sticks a little bit. But all the doors lock so you can secure it well enough. As far as the engine... Apparently it had a small engine fire that burnt and destroyed most of the electrical engine components and wiring. I don't have a lot of details on the fire or how it started just that it was put out with a garden hose and didn't move an inch until I bought it. So... all of the following are new as of July 2008: Coil. Plug Wires. Distributor Cap. Rotor. Condensor. Electromagnetic Cut-off Valve. Oil Pressure Switch. All the wiring for those components and all the rear lights I rewired in July as well. The carburetor is a 34PICT3 that I rebuilt and tuned with new diaphragms, valves, gaskets and float. With all that done it actually runs pretty good! Exhaust burns clean and it doesn’t seem to be leaking any oil. Holds a steady idle and responds to the throttle quickly as it should. The drive train seems to be in good shape. All I can really say about it is that it works as I would expect which means all 4 gears are drivable and the clutch, replaced in 2003, engages/disengages as it should. I'll be honest and say I'm not sure of the condition of the brakes because I haven't gotten to them. But the bus stops when I step on the peddle! All 4 tires are worn with the front being a little better. They could all use replacing if you’re going to start driving this bus everyday. It does have the full-size spare but it needs a new tire. The last but not least thing that needs attention is the headlights. They don't turn on. I would imagine the relay or the dimmer switch needs replacing is all. All the other exterior lights work though. On another note... Coming with this bus are original tool kits and a full file of records and history including the original dealer service manual showing oil changes, valve adjustments, etc. for the last 37 years! That’s why if you have a question concerning the history or a past repair/replacement you should definitely ask me because I could probably find an answer! I hold a clean title in hand. It is registered in Montana until May 31, 2009.
