Up for auction is a survivor of the 70’s. A 1973 VW bus resurrected from a carport in Belen, New Mexico. This bus began it’s American journey at Evans Motors, Inc. in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Salesman Jack Newhouse sold this 7-seater to Michael E. Harris of Auburn, Indiana. This was a standard VW except with an option of two rear vent windows for the added amount of $34.00. We know this because I have the original window sticker from this vehicle. In August 1977 the VW travels to Belen, NM where it is purchased by Dolores Mount Moffett who drove the bus many miles before parking it in a carport, until I was able to buy it from them this year.
Consider this bus a barn find, not a daily driver. I have driven it on the interstate at 65 mph, but, in no way recommend this method for the new owner to take it home.
The oil has been changed but the brakes have not been inspected or bled (pedal goes to floor). If one wanted to spend a couple of days here in Albuquerque, a competent VW mechanic could get it ready for a long trip, if the buyer did not want to have it transported.
This is my second VW transporter. I believe this station wagon, due to the overwhelming originality of this particular specimen, would make a wonderful candidate for a complete restoration. An alternative would be a daily driver with very little required to get it to that status.
The body is very solid with only one spot under the sliding door which will require rust attention. The engine is strong. The left rear brake is leaking. The paint is original as are the seats, only two of which need repairing. There is a chip in the windshield and the rubber gaskets on the windows should be replaced. The tires are holding air, but are not recommended for highway travel.
Thanks for looking.
