This camper van has been part of our family for the last 13 years, and we have camped in southern California's beautiful state parks with it three or four times a year. It was purchased in Oklahoma, then brought to San Diego, California in 1997. It has also served as our family backup car. It easily could be a daily driver. It gets about 20 mpg combined. Our kids are now grown and this camper is ready for its next family. Overall Condition While this Westy is a 30-year old car and it's not perfect - it's clearly in the top 5-10% of campers you'll find on the market. The bus is completely stock and unmodified with the exception of a couple of improvements to the engine noted below. We have all of the pieces that came with the Westy like the owner's manuals, the tables, curtains, mosquitoes nets and the baby hammock. We have consistently improved this van and tried to keep it in top shape. The interior is very clean. We have driven it about 1,000 a year. Here are the list of things that have been done in the last 15,000 miles. The Engine The best part about the '79 Westy is that it has the look of the old with the engine of the new. For example, it has a modern engine with fuel injection and hydraulic lifters. Best of all this bus has had a complete engine overhaul - including new pistons, cylinders and heads. The heads have special valve guides that won't pull out of the heads - a very common problem with these buses. We replaced part of the ignition with a high capacity spark system which give the bus substantially more power, but you can return it to stock in about 10 minutes. The engine has a lot of power and it is ready for long road trips. The Drive Train The bus has new brakes and new shocks. The transmission shifts smoothly and doesn't make any odd noises. The clutch has plenty of miles left in it. The Body The exterior of the bus was completely refurbished two years ago. There were a few bubbles of rust repaired above the wheel wells and a few dents removed. It was completely professional repainted top to bottom in the original Mexican Tan. All of the windows were removed and new rubber seals were installed. There was minor surface rust on the underside of the bus so we had it sprayed with a high quality rust retardant paint. From the outside, it looks like a new bus and we get constant positive comments about the condition of the bus. The bus probably needs a few things, but most are a matter of choice and timing. The pop top canvas has some minor wear and tear and is showing its age. It never bothered us, but you can buy an aftermarket top for around $250 and install it in 2 or 3 hours. The rear engine seal is leaking a bit so you might want to replace it in the next few thousand miles. My mechanic said it would cost between $250 and $300 to replace it but it wasn't urgent - besides every VW leaks a little oil. Lastly, the bus will need a set of tires in the next 5,000 miles or so. The optional gasoline heater is missing, but I told they are very unsafe. The refrigerator works intermittently; we just used an ice chest.
