Vehicle Description
Do you enjoy traveling but can't afford or just don't want to pay these ridiculous gas prices to drive your RV? Or do you love to go camping but like to have the comfort and security you just can't get from a tent? Or maybe you have been searching for an extremely clean and original Westfalia. For all of you who fall into one of these categories, I have the perfect vehicle for you! Take a look at this sharp 1981 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia!
The VW Vanagon (called Transporter/Caravelle in Europe) is just about a foot longer than the compact car VW golf. Yet the interior is roomier than any so called "mini-van" I've seen. In the Westfalia Camper conversion it is equipped for comfortable living for up to four people. Two sleep on top in the popped canvas "tent" top (left) and two sleep in the back of the van. The main advantages of the pop top over a tent are that popping the top only takes seconds, and being high above the ground you are less likely to get wet in a downpour. "Un-popping" is equally fast. When pulling down the top open a window or door to let the air out, and press the tent cloth diagonally out in the two front corners. This keeps the cloth tight so it all ends up under the pop top instead of flapping outside when you drive around.
As you can see from the pictures, the interior of this Vanagon is in fantastic shape, with only minor wear and tear. The rear bench seat folds into a bed with room for two people. In this configuration there is still some room for people to move around in front of the folded out bed, and access the kitchen and cabinets. Feel tired while driving at night? Just pull into a rest stop. Fold down the rear seat and take a nap. Sure beats trying to find a camping spot in the middle of the night, set up a tent in the dark and move your sleeping gear into the tent. Also included in this auction is the outside awning that is connected directly above the sliding door.
Luxury restaurant with a view! Always window table! No reservations necessary! Real budget prices on the menu! Imagine stopping by the fish market in a small seaside town, picking up some really fresh fish; then just drive to the best view available; park; boil some potatoes and fry the fish. Eat inside or outside while enjoying the view. The westy kitchen has a two burner stove, water tap and sink, and a small refrigerator switchable between LPG (when camping) and electric (when driving or camped in a park with "hook-ups"). It all works as it should, and is very easy to use.
When the Westfalia campers were sold new in the US, VW made a big deal about advertising how the "German engineers" had managed to squeeze a storage space into every hole and corner in the bus. There is plenty of room for all of your food and equipment. Still need more storage? There is a luggage rack in front of the pop-top on the westy. Some people put a big Rubbermaid or similar tote-box up there to store stuff in.
The VW is powered by a fuel-injected, air-cooled 2.0 liter engine that produces 67 hp and 101 ft/lbs of torque that effortlessly moves it down the road while getting superb gas mileage. Power is sent to the road through the rear wheels via a 4 speed manual transmission that shifts smoothly. This is a great running van!
The exterior of the Vanagon also shows great pride of ownership with the ivory paint that still shines brightly with only a few small blemishes in the paint. The fiberglass roof is well kept with no leaks or cracks. Good tires with brand new hubcaps compliment the look of the Vanagon nicely. All lights and blinkers work as they should.
All in all, the winner of this VW will be completely satisfied. It is not a 100 point show vehicle, but it is extremely well kept both cosmetically and mechanically. It was originaly bought in Germany and was driven around Europe for a few months before being shipped to the States by the original owners. In fact, the winner of the auction will be the second registered owner!
Now for the boring yet necessary legal disclaimers. This Vanagon is being sold by a licensed and bonded dealership. Winning bid does not include tax, license, or any other applicable government fees. Please do not bid unless you intend on paying. At your convenience you may come by and inspect the vehicle before the auction ends. I will answer all questions as quickly as I can. Thanks, and good luck!
