Vehicle Description
Mark your schedules, this auction ends Saturday night, July 12, 08 at 11PM Eastern time or 8PM Pacific time.
1969 VOLKSWAGEN DUNE BUGGY
This is a classic car and most classic cars are better investments than newer cars or motorcycles, which tend to depreciate. You can usually expect a higher return for your investment over time, if you maintain the vehicle and/or make simple improvements. Plus it is saffer than a motorcycle.
4-speed manual with reverse.
Drive, have fun and save gas too!
The following details are things I was told about this little car. I did not build it, so I can't vouch for everything below.
GENERAL DETAILS: Drives anywhere, also comes with hitch so it can be pulled behind most vehicles (2” ball required) (see pictures) Hitch is also light weight and can easily be installed by anybody. Built from a 1969 beetle convertible in the 80’s, comes with black vinyl rain/dust cover (see pictures) 1965 Impala tail, brake and turn lights, the outer lights are used for tail and brake, the inner lights are used for the turn signals, front nautical-type turn signal assemblies Turn signals are like motorcycle, you have to turn them off with lever Vega high-back bucket seats. Old radio speakers but they do work. Seat belts: lap belts for driver and passenger Front wheels are 15-inch original 69 bug, with 165R-15 tires. Tires in good shape, low miles, but about 6-8 years old. Rear wheels are 4 3/4-inch bolt pattern, 14-inch 5-slot mags, with G-60, 14-inch tires. Tires are in good shape, low miles but over 10 years old. I just lost one of the rear center caps.
ENGINE DETAILS: Engine started life as a 1600cc, but was rebuilt to a 2300cc Estimated horse power is 160 It has an optional performance cam Engine was built for a super charger set-up High volume oil pump (uses Mobil 10W30, holds 2.5 quarts) Dual port heads were machined for larger valves, larger ports, and machined to be like hemi-head design Carburetion: current set-up is for best fuel economy with a single barrel original carburetor JC Whitney has many standard performance options for this buggy Comes with a beetle manual covering 1970-1979 models, which basically covers the chassis of this little car. Close-ratio 4-speed shifter. Cleanable/reusable glass fuel filter
Recent Work Done: In past 2 years: New battery, battery cables and front wheel cylinders
The following is work I had done: New, not rebuilt, master cylinder New front rubber brake hoses, both sides New generator brushes New external voltage regulator New tail light/brake light sockets, both sides New clutch release bearing (throwout bearing) installed 6/28/08 New air filter
There is some wear showing on the driver's seat as shown in the pictures. A nice set of seat covers would preserve the seats and personalize it more for you. It could use some new paint. I got a quote for painting all the blue body for $750 from a local guy. He said he'd do it at his house and sand off all the paint. He said, when removing the paint he would also remove the fine surface cracks that appear in a few spots on the body.
I have seen similar buggies on ebay in the 10 to 12,000 dollar price range. They may have more bolt-on chrome or a prettier paint etc., but for my price you can afford to upgrade it as you see fit. But this car is fun to drive, runs good and was used for parades and cruises. You can always get a snap on top doors added later.
I have State Farm insurance on it. They told me it had to have a body, because they will not insure sand rails (tube-frames with no body). It had to have the gas tank in the original area, up front like it is. And it must have seat belts, which it has. Nothing was said about bumpers. Local police said they don't care about bumpers. But, I can't promise you you wont have to get bumpers for your area and I can't promiss you this little car will meet all you local requirements, that's your responsibility. If you need bumpers they are cheap through some of the aftermarket suppliers. However, all the exterior lights work correctly. I dont think the gas gage works, but you can see how much gas is in the original tank just by looking. The speedo does work. If you need it delivered, I may be able to deliver it, for a fee, or I will work with buyer to find an economical way to get it delivered.
