For an '86 this is remarkably sound. It gets 50 to 55 miles per gallon.
The body is in good condition. There are two parking lot type dents at he left rear. Some of the plastic clips that hold trim on are weak or missing. There is the usual assortment of chips and nicks in the paint. It is an '86. Never wrecked. Original paint. It looks like that.
The tires are good.
The left rear door handle is broken so the door won't open from the outside. Get a handle at the junk yard. Make sure the one you get has that little Y intact.
The seal around the windshield leaks in most rains. There are other rain leaks to the interior as well resulting in mold on the bottom of the back door upholstery. I think the door seals are showing age.
The right front ball joint is pretty loose. Probably best to change both. It is too loose now to stay in alignment.
Oil leaks at the dip stick and perhaps other places. The leak I have been unable to solve is the dip stick leak so I would have a difficult time finding any other leak. It is a nuisance.
We got the car from Springfield German Imports in 2001. It had about 200,000 miles on it. We had been friends with these people for some years. My wife and I had returned from several years out of the country and needed cheap reliable transportation. My wife called Springfield. They said they could put something together for us. They had taken this car for the price of repair of something else. It had a cracked block. They had a short block they were almost finished putting together that they installed as soon as it was done. They used the original head unmodified. It worked great.
My wife works out of state. In the years we have had this car, most of the miles have been highway miles. Highway Miles! It has a very good one year old Sony CD player in it with an MP3 connect.
This has been a reliable car.
Now, there is the ball joint problem mentioned above and some oil burn. It got a citizen's complaint in Marin County, California for excess vehicle smoke. Going up hill heavily loaded. An unkind complaint from someone well meaning. This has been taken care of.
The smoke is most likely oil getting past the valve guides. It could be something else but unlikely. The bottom end has about 100,000 miles on it. The head has 300,000 miles on it. Maybe you see something else. I am too old to want to work on it.
It will work as it is for a while yet. It is going to have to be fixed if it is going to stay on the road much longer. If you are a project kind of person, this is a good project.
