Vehicle Description
1966 original Karmann Ghia coupe up for auction. This ghia spent over half of its life in California, much of the last 18 years in a barn in Missouri, and only the last year outside,. It is currently registered, insured, running and driving. It is a solid, original little car.
This ghia still has it's factory running gear, including it's original 1300cc engine! The transmission and syncros are in excellent shape: no whining, grinding, or popping in any gears, even when you down-shift. Just installed a new shift coupler and adjusted the shifter: shifts perfectly!
It is very unusual to find an aircooled Volkswagen these days with it's original engine, and this one runs strong! It has a stamp on the case signifying it has been rebuilt at one point. It does not burn any oil, nor does it leak oil. I did a full tune up on it including valves, cap, rotor, pionts, condensor, wires, plugs, swapped out for a better distributor and re-timed the engine at full advance. The engine and air filter have fresh 30 weight oil. The round bowl 30-pict carburator has been rebuilt along with the fuel pump, I added a new fuel filter, and ran new rubber fuel lines in the front and rear.
I have rebuilt the entire brake system and installed all new brake hydraulics (master and wheel) and rubber lines. Also installed new front wheel bearings and packed the hubs with fresh grease. Just bought some new front brake pads to replace the ones that are on there now. Wheels have new tires and original aluminum 15" beauty rings.
Car is still 6V! All brake lights, turn signals, and lights work well. New battery and battery cables. All of the terminals, bulbs, and fuse block have been cleaned and any dead bulbs replaced with good ones. Also added dialectric grease on all exterior terminals.
The ghia has had one older repaint over the original Castillian Yellow. The front half of the car has been buffed and the paint looks good, but it does have scratches on the fins. This car is NOT a bondo beast; super straight and very little rust. The front nose has never been hit and the headlight buckets and fresh air vents have no rust (this is rare for a ghia). Heater channels are solid. The wet carpet in the interior did cause some surface rust, thanks to the previous owner for leaving the doors only partially shut while it sat outside for a year. The ghia also has a very light rust area on each outer rocker below the door, but front and rear wheel well and inner rockers have no rust and still sport clean original paint. Of course there is some of the typical rust under the battery. The floor pans are in really good shape, but could use a small patch in the very rear. This car won't need a whole lot of body work to prep for a nice paint job.
I do have most of the rocker trim and all of the clips are there and unbroken. Interior carpet and dash pad were removed because they were brittle. The remainder of the dash is complete with it's 66-only trim and original key and ignition! The interior panels are original (also have the kick panels and firewall mat). I rebuilt the door striker plates by installing brand new latching mechanisms, and greased everything.
This car would make a perfect base for a restoration or drive as is. If you are looking for an unmolested solid ghia, this one could be yours!
**My apologies to those who placed bids or were watching the previous auction. There was an odd problem in viewing the auction. As a result, the ghia has been relisted.
Again, best of luck to all bidders. Please feel free to ask any questions you might have about the ghia. Thanks for looking.
