Vehicle Description
O.K. Here goes, I am listing a recently inspected, daily driver that I tried to work on myself and failed...I actually did a pretty good job, I just made one fatal mistake.More on that later, here are some good things.
It did run and drive very well prior to my bonehead mechanic skills, It averaged 38 MPG with a pretty severe injection pump leak(now resealed) and real bad injectors(now new injector nozzles), the transmission shifts very smooth with a little play in between gears (nylon bushing?), goes into all gears like its supposed to. It seemed to start kind of ok in the winter, This is my first diesel and I read how hard some are to start so this seemed to fall in the middle somewhere. I live in the mountains and traveled 40 miles round trip to work and i was happy with the power and handling considering the hp. It seemed to be a very solid car that I would eventually run veggie oil in but it never made it to that stage of its life.
I resealed the injection pump at the Cold Start Lever and what little bit I did run it Approx. 2 miles, It did not seem to leak, which is good because at start up was when it leaked the most.
Rebuilt Vacuum pump
New Master cylinder
Fresh brake fluid
Very little rust
Interior is better than most I have seen.
Stainless Steel brake lines in front / The rear ones will come with it I just didn’t put them on
New timing Belt
Resealed injecton pump @ Cold start cable…also the rest of the O-rings for the injection pump will come with it..I just didn’t want to get into the pump.
New injector nozzles
New tensioner, I couldn’t seem to get the old one off when I replaced the Timing belt and the old one seemed to be in really good shape so I left it on.
New Titanium battery from Advance Auto Parts
New shifter ball
New drivers side CV boot full of new grease
Most electrical gremlins hunted down and eliminated
New Gasket set ( seen in picture) the only thing I used out of it was the valve cover gaskets and the heat shields for the injectors.
New voltage regulator
New accessory drive belt
New horn/ rewired to red button on dash
Here are some not so desireable things
Drivers side rear brake line is capped off with a compression fitting… the car seems to brake perfectly with out the use of the left rear brake… there is actually a brand new cylinder installed. It just needs new pads.
Paint is not good, looks like the clear coat is peeling
Rust: underneath trunk lid at the lip, small hole on pass side door..see pic, and above rear driverside fender at the chrome strip.
Headliner needs to be removed (I had actually planned on removing it and painting the interior roof with a flat black or something.
Dash is cracked
Probably needs new tie rod ends but it seems to drive really well with out them
2 door panels have been cut off at the bottom because they were rotten, I was going to replace with a piece of upholstery
Temp gauge is inoperable ( havent had time to troubleshoot) new voltage regulator didn’t fix it.
Speedometer is about 5 mph slow
Odometer doesnt work
Fuel gauge is inoperable ( havent had time to troubleshoot)
Blower motor has been removed, fan still generates enough heat and air movement to clear windshield
Toggle switch installed to operate the fan
Seperate button wired to control horn (red button on dash controls horn.. not nitrous:)
Emergency brake inoperable
Windshield leaks a little, I have the silicone to fix it Just never got around to it.
Here is what all you mechanics have been waiting for ( What did he do?????) I am embarrased to say but I figure this information might be helpful in diagnosing how bad I wrecked the motor.
At the end of a long day of installing a timing belt, resealing the injection pump and installing new injectors, I was obviously not thinking clearly…… I couldn’t seem to (what I thought was the problem) retime the injection pump correctly and my car was running horrible… seemed to be firing on only 3 cylinders..so I drove it about 2 miles to see if it cleared up any and see if my reseal job was successful, well the reseal job was a success but my car was still running terrible, so in the middle of me trying to retime the pump and choke down the frustration of it all, I somehow left the injection pump locking tool in the pump pulley and tried to start the engine…gggrrrrrrr. To make matters worse I pulled the lock out of the pulley and tried to start it AGAIN!! !!! (no hate mail please..) so I figure the starter turned the flywheel that turned the crank that spun in the belt that was locked @ the IP which threw it out of time and I finished it off by cranking it over with out the pin in….Oh and by the way... I think the Injection pump was correctly timed the whole time as I did set it with the timing dial gauge, I now believe I had a clogged injector from not keeping everything Super super duper clean as I installed the new ones.
I hope this was helpful, I will start the bid at what I could get for the Injection pump, injectors and some other small things and sell the rest for scrap.
Feel free to use my garage and tools to work on the rabbit if you feel that you can get it running and drive it home, I would bring another head and a tool to remove the injectors as I use a box end wrench and it was painfully difficult. It should have a ½ tank of diesel fuel in it. I would also bring a car dolly just in case you can’t get it running.
If you have any questions please email me or call 304-222-5981 I am selling this and my 1976 Toyota Landcruiser FJ40 only to purchase another diesel Volkswagen with much less work to be done on it. I have two kids 6 and 4 that need me to chase them rather than working on my cars. As much as I love to.
I forgot to add... I have the timing belt cover, and air cleaner cover that is not pictured.
Thanks and God Bless!!
