I bought this excellent machine in Las Vegas, NV on 5/9/2008 with 166700 miles for $1100 and drove it into Pasadena CA where I am working temporarily until 8/1/2008. I must sell the car before I leave for Upstate NY on the 1st of August to return to my permanent occupation, engineering school. I bought the car thinking I would take it with me, but to save money and fuel my girlfriend and I are traveling to NY together in our Jeep rather than taking both this car and the Jeep 3000+ miles.
I have been very happy with the car, but there are some things that you must understand before bidding/purchasing this Volvo. The Volvo has a salvage title due to vandalism that occurred in NV, the full extent of the vandalism is that the back three windows were broken out and the paint was keyed. Since then the windows have been replaced at a cost of $300, the car has been registered and Registration has been paid ($219). The CA license plates for the car were to be given out upon bringing a passed brake and light inspection and a passed smog inspection. The car passed both of these tests successfully on 7/16/2008 after minor repairs. There were two light bulbs out, which were replaced, the front rotors were replaced because they were 1mm to thin. The catalytic converter was replaced with a new OEM part and passed CA emissions test on 7/16/08 with .13ppm CO at 25mph. The total cost for these repairs performed at Autotech International in Culver City, CA was $733.86. I have all of the paperwork to prove this. Photographs are included.
To register the car in CA all we need to do is a transfer of ownership, and you will need to take the brake and light and smog test papers to the DMV and you will get the plates. The registration fees of $219 have been paid and are good through May of 09. The renewal costs in May 09 will be much less than this; most of the $219 are fees for the salvage registration.
The good things about this Volvo 850 Turbo:
The car has a strong engine and transmission that produced 220hp when new. I was told by a Volvo dealership that the car has 90%+ of its engine power remaining.
The rear seats fold down and give you an SUV like trunk in a very sporty vehicle. The car is one of the fastest production station wagons, and also handles very well.
I have wired a 1/8th inch audio input that play anything you want(Ipod, Computer, portable CD player out) when a blank tape is played. The car also will play tapes and the radio.
For a 14year old car it has an excellent 8 speaker stereo, the two tweeters in the front of the car need to be replaced.
The car has a working power front seat and seat heaters.
The car has power windows and a functioning sunroof. The front drivers side window switch is a little finiky. Again, there is nothing wrong with the window mechanism, just that sometimes you have to push the switch a few times to get the window up. This switch can easily be replaced with a part from ebay for $30. The switch does not need to be replaced for the window to go up and down.
The vehicle has a Optima Blue Top Battery
The car gets 21-23 mpg in the city and 26-30mpg on the highway if you drive it reasonably. If you want to go fast, this car will not disappoint for a 1994 wagon.
This is the best car you will find for the money. The registration is good through May of 09 and you know that the car is sound mechanically as it was inspected twice in the past couple of months. I would expect this car to get to 300000 miles +. Volvo is famous for there safe, reliable cars, and they are even still using this 2.4L Turbo engine in some of there cars.
The issues/problems with the car are as follows:
The paint is scratched and worn from the sun, all though it is not noticeable unless you are looking for it(see pictures).
The check engine light, traction light, and Abs light come on when you drive the car. I was told that there is a bug in the computer on 7/16/08 by the mechanics at Autotech. They were instructed to inspect the car for any damaged systems and found nothing other than what was repaired. There are no weird nosies, engine clanks, brake noises, malfunctions, etc, coming from the car. The car was also inspected with no issues found by the dealer who sold me the vehicle.
The leather is worn in the front (see pictures), the dash is damaged some from the sun but not much.
The drivers side door mechanism that stops the door from opening too wide makes a pooping noise when it is opened and closed and needs to be replaced to stop the popping. There is nothing wrong with the function of the door mechanisms.
The plastic trim in the back of the car by the hatch opening is cracked some(see pictures).
I am looking for an honest bidder to make a quick transaction in Pasadena CA.
I have invested $2052.86 total in this Volvo.
-$1100 purchase price
-$219 registration fees
-$733.86 brake/light check, smog check, repairs.
Thanks!, and let the bidding begin...
